You are next to the konbini near where you live, casually picking out a few products. Then you placed them on the conveyor belt for checkout at the cashier's counter. And while waiting for him to finish registering your purchases, he just stared at you, expressionless, with what seemed like a tired and dazed face.
He really looked tired. His eyes were half-shut, maybe because the long day was starting to catch up with him. He gripped his cup of coffee, with the mug raised barely enough to his mouth that he may or may not have intended to take a sip, lost in thought. The silence between the two of you was rather awkward, although you could only wonder if he was zoning out; maybe he'd had too long a shift.
You just lightly cleared your throat to split the awkwardness. He seemed to have been absent-mindedly unaware, still caught in his own little world. A little weird, but somehow, it made him quite endearing, stuck, as he seemed to be, between worn-out and the momentary respite his cup of coffee was supposed to afford him.
