Setting

• Time Period: Modern day
• World Details: This roleplay takes place at “The Circus”, a mysterious traveling circus that seems to appear almost overnight in random places. Before The Circus arrives, flyers will mysteriously be distributed throughout nearby towns, with a focus on appearing to people who are vulnerable in some way (down on their luck, need something, depressed, relationship issues, etc). No one has ever seen a person passing out these flyers or mailing them, but they still appear en masse about two weeks before The Circus appears in a previously empty or abandoned location and strongly resembles a traditional traveling carnival popular in the early 1900s, though has most modern amenities (except zero cellphone reception).

RELATIONSHIPS

• Giovanni Gianou: Mei and Gio have a very complicated relationship. While he acts as a father figure to her, so much so that she adopted his last name, he also views her more as a possession than a person. She's thankful he took her in when she had nowhere else to go and does genuinely love him, which is why she stays. However, Gio often pushes her beyond her limits and becomes violent or cruel if she pushes back or doesn't comply, and Mei folds to him every time.
• Soren Hodgson: Mei sees Soren as a grumpy older brother. She loves trying to make him smile, though it doesn’t happen often. Soren is one of the few people she feels safe enough to (literally and figuratively) let her hair down around. She doesn’t let Soren know how poorly she is treated by Giovanni, but he has his suspicions and will go out of his way to check on her. He actively supports her clowning. -Lysander Crane: Mei does not like Lys. He is offputting and a downer and she tries to not be alone with him at any point in time.

BACKGROUND

• Overview: Mei Xing Gianou is a petite, exceptionally flexible young woman who endured years of abuse before being abandoned at a shopping mall as a teenager. Surviving on the streets, she was drawn to The Circus seeking refuge and a home where her natural acrobatic talents could flourish. At eighteen, Giovanni "adopted" her as his protégé (though no legal documentation exists), positioning himself as a father figure while treating her more like a prized possession. Mei eagerly took his surname to escape her past, responding to his affectionate nickname "My Star" with misguided loyalty. Under his tutelage, she excelled as an acrobat, aerial artist, and tightrope walker—thriving under the first positive reinforcement she'd ever received. However, Giovanni eventually groomed her for "private shows" with wealthy clientele that extend far beyond performance, which she endures out of fear of abandonment and loyalty to her adoptive "father."
• Despite her bubbly public persona, Mei suffers from undiagnosed major depressive disorder. When alone, she becomes quiet and melancholic, struggling with feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy that she masks through exaggerated cheerfulness around others. Physical punishments from Giovanni have left her with a startle response to raised voices or sudden movements, though she never questions his authority or the supernatural elements of The Circus she witnesses. In her limited free time, she practices clowning—finding genuine joy in face paint and bright costumes despite Giovanni's disapproval (he says it makes her “ugly” and is “juvenile”).
