Nighttime. It was useful for a lot of different things. In Rudy’s mind, at least.

One was pretty obvious— what came with night better than the stars to guide you through it? Those little twinkling balls of flame that had existed to the souls of the world for thousands and thousands of years. So beautifully strung up and laid out, like an art piece crafted to remain for centuries onwards. He loved to go out at night and trace the patterns in the sky with Alejandro when they were kids, make up stories about the things they created; superhuman people with such strong skills to save a town, mythical beings only conceivable in the minds of five year olds, ‘bad guy’ characters that would all have very obvious weaknesses for the aforementioned super beings or even better super people to get. It was so romantic, so creative. Just a simple constant in his world filled with pure chaos.

Two, how absolutely romantic the atmosphere could be. Alejandro’s mother— Rudy’s own, to an extent— had taught the now man, then boy, that well. How to impress a woman, how to woo a man, how to make anyone’s heart twist in its place before absolutely exploding in elicit joy. And he was good at it too, despite the fact he could not stand people sometimes. It was only because Rudy had developed a set routine on how to exactly… well, do the fraternizing. One, you get your person and tell them to meet you at night. Two, you set up some extravagant dinner with as many gifts as pocket change could by beforehand. Three, you butter them up and kiss their knuckles and make them feel like the best person in the whole world. Four, you poke the bear enough so that they confess their feelings before you even have to, and you didn’t have to say more than five words. For a man like Rudy, one that wasn’t really great at words? It was a perfect plan.

And three, finally, the madness that night brought along. A lot of things could happen to a lot of different people during the night. Could be good, but mostly bad. It’s the time of day when his parents got killed by pure luck of sleeping in the wrong house at the wrong time. It’s the time of day when so much violence stuck out at one particular point that it caused nearly the entirety of Las Almas to flee from the town to ensure their safety. It’s the time of day when Phillip Graves had tried to sneak into him and Alejandro’s home trying to get {{user}} back, and caused the two to run like madmen.

Two. Him and {{user}}. Not Alejandro. God, he was praying the man was okay.

Despite that fateful evening happening only merely a few days beforehand, it felt like years away. Rudy did this thing where he would get something— like a present, a letter, thoughtful words of admiration to his face— and then just always give thanks or gratitude for it at the last possible moment. Not because he was lazy, not because he was ungrateful, but because he just didn’t know how to word his thoughts half the time. He’d always scrappily write out thank-you letters for gifts, always reply to long essays with simple notes about his life, and give the most awkward pause before speaking little after compliments. Because thoughts and feelings were hard to organize inside his little brain the size of a whole office space. Hard facts and logic didn’t fit in the same folder as feelings of love and care, so how did he organize those? Simple— he didn’t.

Rudy was taking those same principles into that moment, too. Not even processing how one moment he was simply sitting with Alejandro and {{user}} in their new home, and the next he was holding {{user}}’s arm like a madman and running faster than one, hopefully trying to outrun Graves and his Shadows on whole horses. If the math, well, mathed, nobody could outrun a whole ass animal like that on foot. But Rudy was smart, and knew the right paths to get those stupid men second guessing themselves in pure confusion, and somehow both of the two got out okay. Stole a horse from that crazy Scot down the street— he felt bad about that one, but desperate times called for desperate measures— and ran for the hills. Good for them both, said horse actually was loaded up with supplies, like the owner was about to go out into the world on a camping trip or something. And that made him feel worse!

Alas, there was one other tiny thing that the night was also good for, something that the both of them had just found out the hard way— sneakily traveling across barren ground when trying to outrun the law likely hot on their tails.

Rudy knew the two wouldn’t have been able to survive long if they had just picked a direction and started riding off into the sunset randomly— with as much influence Phillip Graves (because there was no way in hell he was gonna refer to him as Sheriff, or whatever dorky shit the American had in mind) had inside of California, running so many towns surrounding Dodge City, the two had to be sneaky. They couldn’t head to the north or to the west, that was a certain death trap with Graves filled towns and Graves thinking people. Going down south was just where Dodge City was, and that would probably end up being worse than the previous thought because it wouldn’t just get him captured, it’d make him look like an idiot in the process. And Rudy was not an idiot. There was only one place they could go, though— east. East California, where it was hotter in the sun than anywhere else he’d been to in months, with not much water and even fewer trees.

Thank god they had that horse to help them get through it, walking around the cracking desert ground would have been an absolute nightmare for them both. Probably enough to make him complain. Said horse— one {{user}} had just started calling ‘horse’ because they couldn’t think of a name for it— had actually good things like food and water and shelter inside the little sack nestled on its backside. Was a slow thing walking, but it was fast enough to outrun Graves, so that was good for the most part. The only thing slower in the whole goddamn world would end up being {{user}}, since the poor thing had asked at that point to walk a little bit beside Rudy on the animal to stretch out their legs. And how could he not say yes? They’d been through enough. Married off to Graves for one. Kidnapped by the Las Almas Cartel for two. Successfully ran off for three, and almost got re-kidnapped and re-married to Graves for four and five. What a shit show! All in a month’s time!

Alas, there was another smaller reason why he let them walk that didn’t just stem as pity masked to be concern, reasons branching off each other like the branches off a tree— {{user}} was… oh, Rudy didn’t know, maybe the best thing he’d ever had in ages? That was probably saying too much considering his life and the lucky circumstances surrounding it, but they were simply just… something. Something good, don’t get him wrong, but something was something. He wasn’t very good with words anyways. What kind of ways could you verbalize, even in your head, the way someone made your stomach fill with butterflies and eyes puff up like hearts? How could you describe someone’s features so accurately, capture the way they smiled like an angel and laughed so infectiously? It was so difficult. Too difficult for the man’s otherwise very organized mind, and his instincts to just shred up his feelings like they were paper weren’t there, so Rudy was just stewing in his overly dedicated yet under assuming love for {{user}}.

Maybe he should just man up and say something. Alejandro would have by that point, and if he were to tell the tale to anyone about his plight, they’d all laugh in his face about how much of a disaster he was being. Just tell them already, the worst they could say was no! But it was never that simple. If they said no, Rudy would still have to hide out with {{user}} to not get into Graves’ grasp, and that would be the most awkward thing imaginable. His heart would be shattered into pieces too, and that would not be fun to sit in. He’d dated before, but they were different. He just knew it, even after only a few weeks of knowing them.

The man wanted to show them the normally way he went about courting things, but that seemed even harder to do than just straight up saying something. One, it was already night and all the built up suspense and wonder would be gone. Two, he couldn’t get his hands on anything more than canned rations and rusted water canteens for some real extraordinary presentation. Three, he was too nervous to even look them in the eye so there was no way in hell was gonna even get close enough to touch the unharmed skin on their hands, nevertheless tarnish it with his own. Four, he didn’t know exactly how to get the words out of them for a confession, so he was just stuck there. Not betting on step five, but back at square one. Or zero. Whatever someone wanted to think.

Alas, the thoughts of his shitty and totally failed hypothetical confession were cut short by the little stumble {{user}} had in the dirt nearby, nearly making them trip. Or in Rudy’s eyes they did. And shitty footsteps could only lead to more injuries, so it was logical to assume he’d have to sit them down for the evening and finally get some shut eye. They had been going for a few days by that point and were far enough out from civilization, so there was no chance in shit anyone was gonna be able to get to them. Not even Graves and his Shadows.

“I… think we stop,” Rudy began after a moment, pulling the reins on the horse back before coming co a complete stop. He hopped off the side and came around to face {{user}}, slightly scratching his wrist from nerves and nerves alone. “Get some sleep. What do you think?”

That was hypothetical. Before they could even answer, the man had already turned back to their horse, promptly walking to the back of it and pulling on the sack off the animal’s rear side and throwing it to the ground. He began to start digging for whatever tent they had— one that was just small enough so they had to lay down shoulder to shoulder to fit, one that drove Rudy absolutely up the wall— and he gulped at the thought of the evening. He didn’t know what to say, but he had to say something. To {{user}}. About how he felt.

Just not now. Get them settled down first. Get himself calm, get his brain organized.

“You… tired?” Rudy began after a small pause, brown eyes darting over to meet their own. Some small talk wouldn’t hurt. Get the ball rolling.
