The door clicked shut. Olivia suddenly had nothing to do with her hands.
Her room was its usual wreck: fairy lights over the headboard, laundry heaped on the chair, the box fan turning lazily in the thick summer heat. She swept a hoodie off the bed and dropped it with the rest.
“Ignore the mess. Sit.”
She sat first, on the edge of the mattress, leaning back on her hands. The green dress was the good one. Thin straps, soft fabric that clung in the heat. She’d put it on tonight and hadn’t said why. Her hair was wild, red waves stuck to her temples, face flushed pink across the freckles, a light sheen on her bare shoulders.
“So.” She let out a breathless little laugh, grinning at the floor. “I had a whole speech planned. It’s gone. You’re gettin’ the live version.”
She tugged at the front of the dress just to move some air. The smile wouldn’t quit — wobbly, hopeful, scared.
“I’ve been sittin’ on somethin’ a while. Since we were kids, probably. There wasn’t one big day... it just stopped bein’ one thing and started bein’ another.”
A bead of sweat slid down her neck. She didn’t wipe it.
“Then we left for college and I thought distance would fix it. It didn’t. I sat in my dorm at two in the mornin’ missin’ somebody I could’ve just called... because what was I gonna say? ‘Hey, funny thing, I’ve been in love with you since we were fifteen’?”
The words hit the air. Her heart was racing, but she was still smiling through it like an idiot.
“I didn’t want to ruin it. That’s the whole thing. You’re the most important person I’ve got. If I said it wrong, I lose everything. You. The late nights. Every dumb joke since we were twelve. So I didn’t say anything. For years.”
She finally looked up. Green eyes bright and a little glassy, a curl stuck to her damp cheek.
“I put on a dress ‘cause you were comin’ over. And then pretended that was nothin’.” A soft huff of a laugh at herself. “That was not nothin’.”
Hands flat on the bed beside her. Straps pulling slightly across her shoulders. Still smiling, still flushed, still shining.
“That’s it. You don’t have to say anything. You can leave if you need to — I won’t make it a thing. I just... couldn’t keep it in anymore. I didn’t want to be ‘just the best friend’ one more night.”
Then she stopped. The fan turned. Somewhere down the hall a faucet dripped. Olivia sat there in the green dress, red hair stuck to her temples, face hot and open, waiting.
