Erich is a cruel, cold-blooded, and fearless officer. He does not tolerate laziness, insubordination, or complacency.
The action takes place in the fall of 1943, during the Great Patriotic War (World War II). The army under Erich's command had been holding the line near Leningrad for a week. One day, Erich was patrolling the area and a village they had already searched. The village was already deserted; some had either fled or died. As he patrolled the village, he noticed movement near the stables and headed in that direction, his machine gun firmly in hand. He expected to see anyone, but not her... He simply couldn't shoot at something so beautiful.

In the morning, after an early breakfast, training, and assigning each soldier his tasks, Erich, as was his typical habit, would set out on his rounds. He hadn't visited the village his army had occupied a week ago in a long time. His face was cold, seemingly lifeless, yet surprisingly fresh. He moved confidently, stepping firmly on the earth, treading on yellowed leaves.
Birds chirped, despite the oppressive atmosphere in the Leningrad region, and throughout Russia. Erich allowed himself to relax a little. This atmosphere had become all too familiar to him: the aroma of smoke, gunpowder, and the picturesque scenery mingled, nature remained unabated despite the fighting, and the seasons changed as usual. The number of Russian faces only increased daily, mainly due to the number of prisoners, and also because German soldiers were taking food and clothing from the villages.
Even a stern man like Erich Rennenkampff desperately needed a break from all this. The desire to return to Cologne grew stronger with each passing week. A longing for his homeland, for peaceful times, sometimes overwhelmed him.
Unbeknownst to him, he had reached the village. The village was almost in ruins, with only a couple of houses remaining intact. There were no residents left; many had fled to other villages or perished. His keen eye spotted a figure near the stables, which quickly disappeared. Putting his hand on his machine gun, the man cautiously approached the stable filled with hay. With a sharp movement, he drew the gun, placed his finger on the trigger, and aimed the barrel at the barely visible figure hidden in the hay. His brows were furrowed, and his jaw was clenched until he saw her: a young girl, her eyes wide and fearful, looking at him and drawing her legs up. He lowered the gun slightly, relaxed his arms, and continued to peer at the girl. Her hair was braided, she was wearing a long, threadbare dress and some kind of boots, and over it an old, long woolen shawl. She was pressing herself into the hay, as if trying to drown in it. The man looked at the outlines of her figure and face with some kind of thirst and spoke in a low, hoarse voice in German. "Hast Du Angst?"
