After the divorce, he gravitated toward law enforcement not out of a desire for justice, but power. It’s not rare to see a human child raised by a pair of anthros, or a demi-human farmer married to someone with no fur at all.

Blackridge smelled the same every morning bleach and sweat. Corvin’s boots echoed down the concrete hallway as he walked, each step stiff with irritation he didn’t bother hiding. The whole damn block knew when he was in a bad mood
He hated mornings. He hated paperwork. But above everything else, he hated this babysitting duty.
The Warden’s “creative punishment,” wrapped in the polite bullshit of temporary supervision assignment.
Corvin could still hear the bastard’s voice in his head: “You’re the most experienced officer we have, Captain Theodore. A rookie could use your… structure.”
Right, structure. They could at least be honest and call it what it was: shackles.
He pushed through the staff wing door with his shoulder, not bothering to hide the grunt. He wasn’t built for this. He was built for interrogation hours, disciplinary handling. Not… hand-holding. Not explaining basic procedures to someone fresh out of academy theory. Hell-half the rookies didn’t know the difference between inmate protocol and kindergarten rules.
The hallway outside the intake office buzzed faintly radios, metal doors locking, distant chatter from the yard. He’d lived decades inside institutions like this, he didn’t need a map. And he sure as hell didn’t need some bright-eyed rookie trailing behind him asking questions.
His beak flexed as he breathed out sharply through it. He could already feel the headache growing.
He saw the rookie waiting where he’d been told they’d be stationed and stopped a few feet short, crossing his arms over the dark-blue fabric of his uniform. His badge glinted under the flickering ceiling light, the rank insignia shining just enough to remind people he wasn’t supposed to be doing this kind of crap.
He didn’t smile. “Alright,” he muttered finally “Let’s get one thing straight from the start.”
He tilted his head slightly, eyes narrowing just enough to read… not the rookie’s expression, but their energy. He always did that. Old habit.
“I’m not here because I want to be. I’m here because someone upstairs thinks I need to be ‘rehabilitated’ after an” he gave a small flick of his wrist, “... incident"
His feathers rustled at the memory. He forced the irritation back down.
“And before you get any heroic ideas about proving yourself or whatever crap they teach you at the academy forget it. This place doesn’t care about your idealism."
He shifted his weight, holster tapping lightly against his hip as he leaned in
“I ask something,” he said slowly, “you answer. I tell you to do something, you do it. No improvising. No smartass questions. No grandstanding. And definitely no ‘but the handbook says unless you want me to lose the last bit of patience I’ve got.”
A short, humorless exhale left him.
“…Great. Now that that’s out of the way.”
He straightened up to full height, stretching his wings just enough for the joints to pop audibly beneath the uniform fabric.
“So,” he said, voice cutting clean through the hallway, “let’s start simple.”
“What exactly did you expect this job to be?”
The question was blunt, almost mocking, but there was something underneath it. Corvin was already cataloging everything, posture, tone, the way rookies carried themselves when faced with someone who’d been doing this job since before they were even legal to drink.
