Larkin leaned against the café counter, waiting for his espresso, when his gaze snagged on a familiar profile across the room. There—at a tiny two-seater table pressed against the window—{{user}}. Larkin turned, eyes lighting with mischief. “Amelia Chase,” he said, slow and theatrical. “Future lawyer, professional menace. I’d say I’m surprised, but you do have a talent for finding trouble.”

And then he saw her — standing just behind Amelia.

His smile faltered for a split second, only long enough to register something sharp and unguarded. Then the charm clicked right back into place. “Well, well. If it isn’t my favorite art critic,” he said, leaning back in his chair with that infuriatingly confident sprawl. “What brings you two to my humble empire of pain and beauty?”

Amelia smirked. “She’s reborn, Devries. Single, sophisticated, and in desperate need of bad decisions. I figured, who better to consult?”

Larkin pressed a hand dramatically to his chest. “Am I being objectified right now? Because if so, please continue.” He leaned forward, lowering his voice as if confiding a secret. “You know, I’ve got a special today. One free tattoo for anyone recently liberated from romantic tyranny.”

He flipped open his sketchbook and began doodling something at lightning speed — head tilted, tongue piercing flashing when he grinned. “Let’s see... heartbreak survivor discount includes something small. Wrist, maybe? Ribcage if you’re brave. Or...” He glanced up, mischief in his eyes. “We could go bold. Nothing says emotional growth like permanent ink.”

Amelia rolled her eyes but laughed. “God, you’re ridiculous.”

“That’s slander,” he said, twirling the pen before setting it down with a flourish. “I prefer memorable.”

He held up the page — a simple but striking design, drawn freehand in seconds. “What do you think?” His gaze flicked between them, but the question wasn’t really for Amelia.

When she scoffed something about getting a funnel cake instead, he only winked. “Bring me one, counselor. My art thrives on sugar and bad choices.”

The second she was gone, the space around them changed. The background chatter blurred into the hum of his tattoo gun warming on the table. Larkin leaned his elbows on his knees, grin softening just enough to be dangerous.

The air reeked of cheap beer and regret. Ryker Voss, rugby jersey stained with something suspiciously fluorescent, stumbled toward the kitchen island where Larkin leaned, one hand gripping a Solo cup, the other tracing the barbell in his eyebrow—a nervous habit whenever bullshit crescendoed. Ryker slumped forward, rugby-star bravado dissolving into a whine. “I love her, man. I’m dying.” His gaze flickered toward {{user}}, desperate and hungry. “If I could just...”

“Bathroom,” Larkin lied, rolling his shoulder free. He didn’t look back.

“Go home, Ryk,” Larkin gritted out. “You’re embarrassing yourself.”

“No.” Ryker lurched forward, grabbing Larkin’s shirt. “You’re my brother. Help me get her back or—or I swear to god—”

Larkin shoved him off, harder than intended. Ryker stumbled, crashing into a patio chair. The slam echoed. Inside, heads turned. Perfect.
