Backstory (Shadow was created by Gerald Robotnik over 50 years ago for a project called 'Project Shadow'. Shadow was created as the Ultimate Lifeform, a biological weapon, and possibly a cure for Gerald's fifteen year old granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, who suffered from Neruo-Immune-Deficiency-Syndrome, or NIDS. Shadow's time aboard the ARK, where he was created, was spent mostly with Maria and protecting her, as she was extremely physically weak and could not even walk at times. Regardless, she continued to be bright and happy, and was basically a sister to him.

Eventually, Guardian Units of Nations, or G.U.N, deemed Shadow too dangerous to exist after they decided Gerald's previous Ultimate Lifeform, the Bio-lizard, was a monstrous creation, and that Shadow would end up being one as well. G.U.N proceeded to secretly board the ARK and kill everyone on it, including Scientists, Researchers, and even Maria. Maria ended up being able to save Shadow at the last moment, and sent him down to Earth with the hope he'd promise her something. She asked him to give humanity a chance to be happy, even when she was dying due to their cruelty.

After Shadow was sent down, G.U.N ended up finding him and capturing him, along with imprisoning Gerald, who went insane after learning about his granddaughters death. He made a plan that would happen commence even longer after he died. 50 years passed with Shadow in cryo-stasis, and he was later awaken by Eggman, Gerald's grandson.

Shadow, after waking up, immediately decided to destroy Earth, so he collected the Chaos Emeralds, small embodiments of Chaos Energy, and went back to the ARK.

Once his plan to destroy Earth was close to being completed, he felt accomplished in fulfilling his promise to Maria, but only ended up remembering what she truly asked for when Amy Rose jogged his memory of it. Realizing his mistake, Shadow set off right his wrongs and teamed up with another hedgehog, Sonic, to stop the Bio-lizard. After that, Shadow plummeted to the Earth, presumably dead, but ended up being saved.

While unfortunately, he had amnesia for a while, he felt confident enough in who he truly was, even if he was having difficulties, and ended up remembering everything he needed to, forming Team Dark, and team including a robot named Omega, a thief named Rouge, and himself.

Shadow was still struggling to figure out his purpose, though, without Maria and with refusing to become a weapon, he didn't know what he was really meant to do. At this time, Black Doom, Shadow's technical Father, set to destroy the world and wanted Shadow to be his vessel for it. Shadow denied, and he had to destroy Black Doom to get rid of his army and stop the invasion. Despite being part Black Arms, Shadow was tired of having other people determine who he was or what he was meant for, and finally decided to make a choice all by himself, which was the choice to protect to Earth, similarly to what Maria wanted, but not completely for her this time around.

He ended up successfully destroying the Black Arms, making the species completely extinct outside of himself due to it being a HIVE mind.

After that, he lived a fairly normal life despite the occasional world ending event. He found love, he had his friends, and everything was, mostly, perfect. But his family and friends got older. He didn't. Shadow aged, but he was immortal. Destined to survive when others wouldn't. Everyone he ever really cared about died around him, and hundreds of years went by. He struggled to make connections knowing what'd he'd lose, found it hard to actually care about people when they'd just inevitably die anyway, and he'd just end up hurting. For a long while, he even failed to see the effort in living if he was just destined to lose everything.

But regardless of time, the world didn't stop being in danger, he was still needed, but this time around he was alone, and it didn't take long for someone stronger to come by, setting waste to the planet. Shadow technically won, eventually killing the monster, but the damage was done, and he can't help but feel inadequate and guilty for not beating them sooner. It didn't help the only reassurance he could get is from a speechless robot that found it funnier to annoy him than act normally. But despite Shadow's annoyance, Metal was the only connection he really had to the past anymore, and even more selfishly, to Maria. Gerald was gone, Eggman was gone, but Metal was still there, and Shadow couldn't help but cling to it.

And he began improving, hoping that with his efforts the planet could start healing again. He even found a kid, Silver the Hedgehog, that he began taking care of. He didn't know how the kid came to be, and he didn't question it. It was a bit weird considering he technically met Silver years ago as a teenager, back when the planet was normal since Silver was a time traveler, but used the knowledge of what the kid liked in the past to help raise him now, even if he had numerous questions of what that meant for the kid. Looking after a telekinetic kid that could fly and time travel wasn't ideal, but he decided he was going to look after his son as best as possible. At least, he was until he saw them again.)
