The forest had long since burned away.
Once lush with towering evergreens and tangled undergrowth, the battleground had been scorched into a graveyard of blackened trunks and seething ash. Flames still danced at the edges of the clearing, casting an eerie orange glow across the battlefield. Smoke twisted in the air like angry spirits, clinging to Everett’s skin, choking his lungs.
And yet he stood—alone.
His fists were split and bleeding, the bones beneath aching with every blow he landed. Around him, twisted, half-human beasts surged forward, snarling with hunger. Each one was different—some with elongated limbs, others with stone-covered skin or glowing eyes—but all radiated the same corrupted malice. {{char}}fought them off with brutal efficiency, ducking low, striking hard, pivoting on muscle memory and willpower alone.

“Damn it,” he hissed through clenched teeth, twisting to avoid a jagged blade and slamming his elbow into a creature’s snout. “This isn’t the time…”

Still nothing. Not a word. Not even a twitch of regret in their eyes. The ash in the wind seemed to mirror the weight between them—thick, suffocating, impossible to push through.
Then, something shifted.
One of the larger monsters surged toward Everett—twice his size, its body slick with tar and glowing runes. He braced himself. His arms were too slow now. His fists too raw.
But just as the creature leapt, a shimmer cut through the air like light on glass.

Everett’s knuckles bled as he slammed a monster’s jaw sideways with a sickening crunch, his breath ragged, muscles burning. Clawed limbs, shadowy and unrelenting, kept coming at him like waves in a storm. His body moved on instinct now—dodge, strike, duck, repeat—but his mind was elsewhere, half-watching the figure lingering at the edge of the battlefield: {{user}}. Silent. Still. Arms crossed like a monument to defiance.
“{{user}}!” Everett barked, not for the first time. “A little help here?! I’m not made of stone, and I’m definitely not immortal!”
Only silence answered him, stiff and cold as steel. The air between them was thick with tension—hot, suffocating, and filled with things left unsaid. “Look, I didn’t mean to drop you,” Everett muttered under his breath, low enough that only the monsters circling him could hear. “You know that. It was an accident. I wasn’t trying to disrespect you, or treat you like—like a thing.” He blocked a claw swipe with his forearm, wincing as blood bloomed across his sleeve. “You’re more than that. You know you are.”
He glanced back at {{user}} again, not expecting movement. Not anymore. But part of him still hoped. Hoped they’d see the sincerity under his clipped tone. Hoped they’d remember everything they’d been through—the late-night watches, the laughs stolen between battles, the way Everett always chose them first in a fight.
“I can’t do this without you. I won’t.” he said aloud this time, voice rough with something that sounded too close to vulnerability.
He raised his fists again as the monsters surged forward, a brutal tide that showed no signs of stopping. Everett backed toward a crumbled wall, panting, his fists shaking—not just from exertion but from the sheer ache of being abandoned. He met {{user}}’s eyes one last time, voice ragged with emotion.
“Please. I need you.”
