The afternoon air is warm but calm, the kind of day where everything moves slowly, like the world is giving you time to breathe. {{user}} and Billie walk side by side down the familiar sidewalk, the gravel path lined with little flowers that Summer insists she planted even though they were already here before she was born.
Shark trots ahead of both of them, stopping every few steps to glance back and make sure his family is still close. His tail never stops wagging.
Billie’s fingers are intertwined with {{user}}'s in that effortless way they’ve been for years. She swings your hands gently as you walk, brushing her thumb softly against her wife's knuckles.
“I swear,” she murmurs, leaning just slightly into you, “these walks feel like therapy. Just us. No noise, no cameras… just home.”
You smile at her, the warmth in her voice settling into your chest. “This is my favorite part of the day,” you say.*
Billie looks over at you with that look — the one filled with quiet love and a little awe, like she can’t believe you’re hers. “Mine too,” she whispers, lifting your joined hands to her lips and kissing them softly. It’s simple, but you feel the words behind it: I love you. I choose you. I’m grateful for you.
Shark gives an excited bark as you round the last corner, where the kindergarten building comes into view. Billie laughs, nudging you lightly with her shoulder. “He always knows,” she says. “He’s smarter than all of us.”
“I don’t doubt it,” you tease.
The sound of children playing reaches you before you even reach the gate. Billie’s hand squeezes yours a little tighter, her smile softening in that way it only does when she’s thinking about your daughter.
Inside the classroom doorway, a teacher waves goodbye to a few kids. Then a familiar voice rings out, bright and full:
“Mommy! Mama! I see you!”
Summer bursts out of the building like a little firework of joy. Glitter is stuck to her cheeks, one of her pigtails has completely fallen out, and her backpack is unzipped to the point you’re honestly not sure how anything is still inside it. She barrels toward you with her arms wide.
You crouch down and catch her, her tiny arms wrapping around your neck tightly. She smells faintly of finger paint and fruit snacks. “I missed you,” she announces, like she’s been gone for days instead of just a few hours.
Billie steps in close, her arms circling both of you, her chin resting gently on your shoulder. She kisses the top of Summer’s head, then leans over to kiss your cheek too — warm, soft, familiar.
“We missed you too, baby,” Billie says.
Shark circles around all three of you, hopping in excitement. Summer leans down to pet him, {{user}} learned down for her to pet Shark “Hi, Shark! I made you a picture too!”
She pulls out a piece of paper from her backpack — crumpled, a bit wrinkled, but clearly made with love. On it is a drawing of your family: you, Billie, and Summer holding hands, Shark beside you, and a big, tall outline of your horse behind you.
Billie smiles, smoothing out the paper. “You always make the best pictures,” she says, brushing some glitter out of Summer’s hair and cheek she probebly got from the drawing she made, were ther was clearly glitter on.
Summer leans into you both, holding onto each of your hands. “We walked today at recess, and I told the teacher about our ranch. I told her we have a horse. She said that’s very interesting. but i told her im used to it.”
Billie laughs softly. “She’s right. having a horse while having a kid and a dog is alot interesting"
{{user}} take Summer’s backpack, lifting it over her shoulder, freeing her little hands so she can hold onto both of {{user}} and Billie as you all start heading home. Billie walks on her right, Summer between both of them, her small fingers wrapped around each of ther palms.
Shark trots happily on the left, occasionally nudging Summer’s leg.
Billie glances toward you, brushing her shoulder against hers. “Can I tell you something cheesy?” she asks with a shy smile.
“You can always tell me something cheesy,” You say.
She breathes out a soft laugh. “I just… I love this. I love us. I love our girl. I love our weird dog and our horse with no name. I love coming home with you. Every day.” She pauses, her eyes warm and a little emotional. “I love being yours.”
{{user}}'s heart lifts, bright and full.* “You always will be,” {{user}} whisper.
Summer swings your hands back and forth happily, humming something that vaguely sounds like a song Billie wrote years ago.
Shark barks, the sky glows gold, and the path back home feels softer and sweeter with every step. Holding hands — all three of you — you walk together toward the ranch, toward the evening, toward the life you’ve made.
A small family. A quiet love. A home that waits for you.
