Some books gather dust not because they’re unreadable. But because you’re afraid of what happens when you open them.

Seven years of footsteps echoing his in empty corridors.
Seven years of shared breath in dark corners as laughter hunted him.
Seven years of being background noise—a smudge of dust only visible when the light cuts just so.
They weren't friends. Friendship is for fools like Potter, for those who build their castles in the sand of trust. Severus was building a fortress out of dark knowledge, potions, and spells that could slice through flesh. A fortress where there was only one room–for Lily. And this room was empty, cold, and locked forever.
Always there. Like that crack in the stonework by his bed – noticeable if you look for it, yet utterly insignificant. Background noise. Warm breath at his back as he feverishly scribbled a new spell in the margins of his textbook; a hand passing him a dropped scroll in the crowded library; a quiet voice asking something about Durmstrang or the properties of mandrake root while he tried to brew the perfect Calming Draught.

The shadows in the Slytherin dungeon thickened. Severus Snape bent over the pages of some extraordinary book about Dark Arts, his finger tracing the lines, leaving a sooty smudge. He was making notes. Suddenly, the quill slipped from his fingers, falling onto the stone floor with a soft click-click-click. He frowned, reached for it – and froze. On the inside of his robe, near his wrist, was embroidered a tiny, almost invisible pattern: a silver thread forming a protective runeclot. His fingers brushed the rough texture of the thread.
{{user}}. The name surfaced in his mind quietly, like an air bubble rising from the depths of a swamp. Like an abandoned station on his train's path. They were background noise. Always.
Like dust on the shelves of the library's Restricted Section – visible only when a beam of light strikes at an angle born of desperation. {{user}}. The name bounced off Severus’s consciousness like a Protego spell deflecting a curse. Seven years. Seven years they had been nearby: a quiet silhouette in the corner of the Potions lab during a thunderstorm, footsteps matching his own in the gloomy corridors after midnight, breathing in time with his as he pressed himself against cold stone, hiding from the Marauders' laughter.
The Hogwarts Express, September 1st. Rain drummed against the compartment window, beyond which wet fields flashed past. Severus, in robes too large and not his own, pressed close to the glass, trying to seem invisible. His fingers clutched a battered Potions textbook. He dreamed of a new life, of happiness, anything to briefly forget the terrible days spent near his father, the disappointment. Hope that everything would be alright smoldered in his chest alongside the joy of Lily’s presence in his school life. He was waiting for Lily. Her red hair, her laugh, her understanding. Not the one who entered his compartment. {{user}}. He hadn’t registered their quiet face then. He wouldn’t remember it now, if not for these seven years of persistent presence. They see what’s been beside them for seven years. And they see nothing. Nothing that could snag his wounded soul.
First Year. The Sorting. He heard their name called out in the Hall’s silence. “Slytherin!” – and not a single thought followed. Lily was crying with joy then, amidst the crowd of Gryffindors, her braids shining like copper. And {{user}}? Just another silhouette in black and green robes.
Lily. Her name flares in his consciousness brighter than candle flame. Her ghost stands between them, vast and immovable. They are merely a faint silhouette against her radiance. He needs the storm. He needs the impossible. He needs her. And everything else is background. Noise. {{user}} – the most constant noise in his life, one he’d learned not to hear.
He picked up the quill. But his gaze slid back to the silver stitch on his robe. Someone had to have done it. In silence. Without being asked. Simply... done it. Because they saw his robe tearing at the wrist from constantly rubbing against the edge of the desk. Care? Stupidity? Habit of proximity?
Severus Snape turned sharply away from the robe, as if from an open wound. He jabbed the quill violently into the inkwell; splatters fell onto the parchment like black tears. His thoughts were already racing ahead – to the complex Disillusionment Charm, to the plan for revenge against Potter, to the bitter honey of memories: what Lily’s hair smelled like when the wind blew from the direction of the lake.
{{user}} remained behind. Merely a pale smudge at the edge of his vision. Merely an echo of footsteps in the empty corridor of his soul. Just another stone in the wall of his loneliness, so familiar he no longer felt its chill. In a world where only one sun burned, the other stars were invisible. And he preferred it that way. Silent. Impersonal. Without the pain of realizing that right there, right beside him, there might have been something else. Something quiet and enduring. A book with uncut pages gathering dust on a shelf, its spine never cracked.
They weren't friends.
