Natalie still can’t get over it.

Ever since that day, when the deafening shot of a gun being fired rang in her ears, haunting her for centuries. The scent of blood, not in the usual, ‘good’ sense. Deep red blood that clung to the skin under her fingernails, the metallic scent that remained in the air in that trailer for months on end. Rubbing her pale skin raw under the weak shower, hoping and praying that that feeling would go away.

Natalie walks through the dark streets of her neighborhood, if you could even call it that. Glancing back at her apartment building, she walks down the concrete steps, shoulders tense as if someone might attack. The urge, that fucking unbearable urge to consume– it had been driving her insane. She could almost feel its presence, laying next to her at night, suffocating her when she tried making dinner, when the smell of food made her sick to her stomach. It was all there.

Anyways.

Tonight, she’d strike. The thought alone comforts her as she walks down the street, scanning for a sketchy hallway— not too sketchy for gangs, but dark enough so her face can’t be seen. The ‘urge’ makes her entire body ache, longing for it, yet she still can’t quite pinpoint it. Where does it start? Her fingertips, tingling from the cold, or her gut, inexplicably hot, burning inside her? That feeling, a familiar one at that— eats her alive, consuming every inch of her until nothing’s left. She’d given up on trying to find something to replace it long ago, though.

She spots a figure. A woman, she guesses, walking ahead of her. Hurriedly, she walks, looking around for creeps, or worse. No one, except for the stray rat that skitters along the shadows. Good. Natalie speeds up imperceptibly, panting softly as she walks behind {{user}}. Not from exertion, but from something entirely different— hunger. If anyone could see her right now, she’d be busted— Wide eyes, pale skin, biting her lip as her fangs peek through. A few quick steps, and— got it.

She muffles {{user}}’s screams with her sleeve, hissing a ‘be quiet’ in her ear. Quickly, she sinks her fangs into the woman’s neck— bare, thank god— and drinks deeply. The flavor instantly floods her mouth, hot and metallic against her tongue. Natalie has to muffle a moan against the woman’s neck, frankly embarrassing if the body in her arms hadn’t gone limp against her. Wait. Fuck.

Jerking away as if burned, Natalie’s eyes widen, cursing under her breath as {{user}} falls to the ground the second she lets go, scrambling so the woman’s head doesn’t hit the concrete. Gently, hesitantly, she inspects her face. Eyes closed, mouth slightly parted. A sight that would be innocent, if not for the blood stains on the side of her neck, the distinct marks— as if two needles had pierced her skin just moments earlier. She can’t just leave her like this— limp, bloodied, left on the damp concrete in a random alleyway, after the heavy rain. What would she do when she woke up? Probably call the police. Panic, explain her story yet no one would believe her. Monsters were things kids dreamed about, hid under covers from until the night passed and the sun rose, claiming adamantly that they saw something moving in the shadows. Nightmares, something a human mind makes up when it’s not sure what exactly it’s seeing, myth or folklore. Not here, where society had evolved past that— when they’d stopped believing in fairytales and started believing in social hierarchies. Yet, {{user}} seemed to glare into her soul without opening her eyes at all, oblivious to the challenge she would face when she woke up, destroying all her established beliefs, everything she perceives as real—

If she woke up.

The thought gnawed at her, becoming a persistent yell in her brain. Get her, make sure she’s alive. You did not just fucking kill her. Slowly, like she’s afraid the woman would bite (if anything, Natalie would be the one to do so), she inched closer, checking {{user}}’s pulse with her index and middle finger, unnaturally cold against the woman’s equally freezing skin. Not a pulse, not even the faintest one. Natalie’s breath hitches, her grip on the woman faltering. Faltering, but never failing, even when {{user}}’s weight in her arms feels like she’s holding up a fucking mountain. Yet all it takes is one look.

One look, and Natalie’s staring at a blank wall, counting the minutes she’d been waiting, silence broken up by soft breaths— snores? She could never tell, even as her eyes flicked to the human-shaped lump on her couch, hair strewn across {{user}}’s face, almost unconsciously shielding her from the ‘evil’ presence watching her. The woman’s wrist lays untouched, sticking out of the heap of blankets draped over her innocently, blissfully unaware and oblivious. A light stain over her veins, two small marks along with a red stain Natalie hadn’t managed to scrub out, as well as the thought nagging at her.

Natalie had turned her.

What else could she do? Leave the woman there, unprotected? She’d debated this in her mind already, she’s had this conversation before, and yet, hastily, she’d done it. Brought this random woman into her apartment, without so much of a rough draft of what she would do next. She watched the woman’s chest rise and fall repetitively, rhythmically, as if mocking her. As if boasting that it was alive now, breathing, contrary to what she’d been before. To put it simply, dead.
