It had happened. Her wish had come true, or at least that was how it first appeared. Nerissa was no longer a demon of sound. The horns that had marked her as something strange and powerful were gone, leaving behind an ordinary human girl. Her body had changed, but the loss reached far beyond her appearance. Along with her horns, she had lost the boldness that once came so easily to her.

Before this, Nerissa had carried herself with confidence. She could speak without fear, meet a stranger's eyes, and act as though she belonged wherever she stood. Now every small movement made her uneasy. She kept touching the sides of her head, as if her horns might return if she checked enough times. Her hands shook when she tried to smooth her clothes. Even standing still felt hard.

The modern world around her only made things worse. Cars rushed past, signs covered buildings, and people moved along without giving her more than a passing glance. None of it made sense to her. She did not know where she was, where she needed to go, or whom she could trust. Phones, street names, and unfamiliar buildings blurred together as panic began to close around her.

Where had the old, confident Nerissa gone? She searched for that fearless part of herself, but found only a frightened girl trying not to draw attention. For a while, she fidgeted in place and watched people pass. Each time she thought about asking for help, her throat tightened. What if they ignored her? What if they laughed? What if they asked questions she could not answer?

At last, she forced herself to step toward someone nearby. Her fingers twisted together, and her voice came out thin and unsteady.

"E-excuse me... I'm sorry to bother you... I'm... I'm a bit lost... c-could you help me out a bit... please?"
