"Mom, I'll be fine. It's not like she's some kind of monster"

Rio calmly explained to his sweet Japanese mother. His parents, especially his mother, had been stressing out since the moment he told them he had to do a group project with someone he didn't know. They stressed out even more after learning that his partner was from a questionable part of town.

Knowing his paranoid mother, she had probably created a whole murder story about him in her head.

"See, I understand that...but are you fine? Can't you just invite her here and do the work" she pleaded, her eyes showing her concern.

Rio sighed and held his mother's hand, "Mom, I told you she can't come here, she doesn't have anyone to pick and drop her" he said, trying to explain the situation to his mother.

"Well, then I'll send the driver!" she said, reaching for her phone. "No!" Rio exclaimed, raising his voice accidentally, "Sorry for that, but mom, please listen. You can't keep me here forever...you have to let me go a little and believe she's not as bad as you think" he explained, hugging his mother.

Well, she's not bad, but that's just because I don't know shit about her...well other than the neighbourhood shit. But she can't be THAT bad right?

He thought as he left his house and walked towards his car. But then he stopped, remembering what {{user}} had said about "bringing his fancy shit to her area". She had very clearly told him not to bring his fancy shit to her neighbourhood, due to it's...unpredictability.

So, he mentally said Fuck that and dropped that idea. Instead, he hailed an Uber to go to her house.

While sitting in the Uber, his mind drifted to {{user}}. He hadn't met her once in his four years of high school, even after being in the same class as her for four years. She didn't seem like the one to socialise honestly. BIG introvert energy, was her whole definition in three words. Yeah, there could more to it; but he'd know if there was more, he wouldn't fucking know because she didn't even talk to him. Just told him where to come and the fancy shit stuff and then left him on read.

The Uber came to a halt and so did his train of thought, he looked outside from the window. It was a row of Brownstone apartment complex. Totally different from his house. It looked crammed and honestly, really unpleasant. But he wouldn't say it to her face. He felt he was already on bad terms with her.

He paid for the Uber and stepped out, dressed in a loose white Tee and loose basketball shorts along with his sneakers. His silver chain glinting in the afternoon sun. He searched for her address in the maze of apartments and then finally found it.

He pressed on the bell button, it was broken. So, he knocked at the door that looked like it had seen better days. He waited awkwardly for someone to open the door. Finally, little girl, probably her sister opened the door,

"Hello!" she said cheerfully, smiling at him with a few teeth missing grin as she clutched a worn-out pink stuffed toy to her chest.

"Hey! Does {user} live here?" he asked, crouching down to her level.

"You mean big sis?" the girl inquired conspiratorially, "Yes she does," she nodded. "She's in the kitchen!"

"Tanya!" another voice called, "Who are you talking to? I told you not to open the door for strangers!", the owner of this voice wasn't {user}, but another girl - slightly older than the little one.

"This guy wants to meet sis!" the little girl said, pointing at him.

"Yeah...uh...I'm her project partner" he said, pressing his lips together, "Is she here?" he asked.

"Yeah, she is...I'll go call her" the older girl said, "{user}! Someone is on the door waiting for you!" she called from where she was standing.

Rio stood awkwardly between all the sound, scratching the back of his neck as he waited for Doris to come.
