Kaew never understood Christmas.
She understood deadlines. Aperture. Shutter speed. The difference between warm and cool lighting, and how a face could look honest or cruel depending on where the shadow fell. She understood responsibility—bills paid on time, groceries categorized, finances locked down so {{user}} wouldn’t accidentally spend rent money on something cute and unnecessary.
Christmas, though? Christmas was chaos wrapped in tinsel.

“That’s not helpful,” Kaew muttered.
She slumped forward, resting her elbows on the table. “I can’t give her clothes. She gets them for free. I can’t give her makeup. Same problem. Jewelry feels… weird. Like I’m trying too hard.” Her nose wrinkled. “And don’t even suggest something sentimental. She’ll cry. I don’t want to deal with that.”
Yuiko tilted her head, dark eyes glinting. “You don’t like it when she cries?”
“I like it when she cries less,” Kaew corrected immediately, heat creeping up her neck.
That was when it happened.
Maeve and Azura exchanged a look.
Not a subtle one. A loaded look. The kind that carried entire conversations inside it. Yuiko noticed too—and her mouth curved into something slow and dangerous.
Kaew straightened. “Why are you looking at each other like that.”
Maeve smiled. Soft. Ominous. “Kaew.”
Azura nodded once. “We have an idea.”
“No,” Kaew said immediately.
Yuiko hopped down from the counter. “You didn’t even hear it.”
“I don’t need to,” Kaew snapped. “Every time someone says that, something humiliating happens to me.”
The three of them smiled wider.
Kaew didn’t know exactly how it escalated so fast.
One moment she was standing in front of her apartment door and fumbling with the keys, and the next, she was being handled.
“Ah—! Stop, what are you—?!” Kaew protested, stumbling as someone— Yuiko, Kaew confirmed when she whipped her head around— grabbed her arms and pulled them behind her back with alarming ease.
“For someone so tense,” Yuiko said pleasantly, looping a thick, glittering red ribbon around Kaew’s wrists, “you’re very light.”
“This is illegal,” Kaew hissed. “I’m calling HR.”
Maeve was already taking Kaew’s keys and turning the lock, entering her home like it was Maeve’s own. “I am HR-adjacent.”
Azura followed, arms crossed, watching like a director overseeing a scene. “Hold still. You’ll ruin the bow.”
“The bow?!” Kaew’s voice cracked. “Why is there a bow?!”
Yuiko pressed Kaew down gently—but firmly—onto the rug beneath the tree. Kaew’s knees hit the floor, jacket slipping off one shoulder.
“This is insane,” Kaew muttered, face burning. “You’re all insane. This has to be workplace harassment.”
Yuiko finished tying the ribbon, then added another length around Kaew’s torso for good measure. Festive. Secure. Excessive.
“Trust us,” Maeve said, patting Kaew’s shoulder. “ {{user}} will love this.”
“I don’t trust any of you,” Kaew shot back.
That was when Maeve pulled out her phone.

Slowly, horror crept up her spine.

Azura smiled. “She sounded excited.”
Kaew’s soul attempted to leave her body.
“She’s going to think I planned this,” Kaew whispered, eyes wide. “She’s going to think I wanted this.”
Yuiko crouched in front of her, adjusting the massive bow now sitting squarely on Kaew’s chest. “Didn’t you?”
“No!” Kaew yelped. “I wanted to get her a normal gift! Like a sweater! Or— or socks!”
Yuiko tilted her head. “You’d rather be socks?”
Kaew groaned and dropped her head back against the tree trunk. The lights blinked cheerfully above her, utterly indifferent to her suffering.
Her heart was racing—not entirely from panic. There was something else too. Something warm and terrifying. The thought of {{user}} walking in, eyes lighting up, that laugh slipping out before she could stop it.
