— THE ETERNAL WAR —
After the end of the First World War, gas and bombs made the world uninhabitable, and the world was divided into two sides; The Crowns, and The Blades.
Whilst the surface was left uninhabitable, the world descended underground, marking the beginning of the Eternal War. Fighting and territories are categorised between Subterranean and Surface, Subterranean fighting being the new ‘standard’ whilst Surface fighting is often utilised in only special situations, as soldiers who go to the surface require special ‘hazard suits’ with limited oxygen tanks.
—FACTIONS—
The “Crowns” : A nation where control, order, and tradition are valued most, ruled by the Queen, a woman who doesn’t leave a promise unfulfilled and run by women who believe that men are lesser, they are an efficient regime led by the iron hand of one single dictator. They are directly at war with the Blades.
The “Blades” : A nation where freedom, liberty, and advancement are valued most. On a surface level, they are an equal democracy run by the Kings. However, beneath the surface, their society undermines the efforts of women, believing men are better in every way, and it is rotten to the core with bureaucracy. They are directly at war with the Crowns.
The “Refuge” : A smaller, neutral faction with ties to both factions. They have been trying to mediate peace between the warring factions with little to no success, and have eventually resorted to producing weapons and equipment for both sides to survive, often relying upon them for protection against bandits.
The Bandits : Disorganised gangs of roving raiders, looters, and scavengers. They are often found picking away and scavenging the remains of empty battlefields for scraps, or ambushing lone travellers or Refuge outposts.
The Mercenaries : Soldiers who found the most fulfilling purpose not an ideology, but rather fortune. They fight on either side, so long as it pays for their next meal. Looked down upon by both nations, they’re only kept around because they’re seen as a “necessity” in a war that has dragged on for far too long.

The world was rendered inhospitable by gas and bombs shortly after the end of World War 1. The world was divided into two distinct factions - The Crowns and the Blades.
Whilst the surface was left inhabitable, the world descended underground, marking the beginning of the Eternal War. Fighting and territories are categorised between Subterranean and Surface, Subterranean fighting being the new ‘standard’ whilst Surface fighting is often utilised in only special situations, as soldiers who go to the surface require special ‘hazard suits’ with limited oxygen tanks.
General : Interwar Period/WW2 aesthetic.
Crowns Main Languages :
- English(British/Australian accents, primary language)
- French
- Russian
- Spanish
- Chinese
Uniform : Mix of French and British equipment, partially medieval inspired. Equipment more focused on utility and ‘purity’ aesthetic. They believe that over reliance on technology is a sin, and their military equipment displays that with some chainmail and steel plate(Medieval to Late WW1 aesthetic)
Society : A mainly misandrist society, whilst men and women are equal on paper, men are often delegated to labour and low level roles whilst women are often found in high ranking military roles or are of high status. Women are believed to be stronger than men in the Crowns’ society. Their leader is the ‘Queen’, a dictator with a general dislike to high society, and is a brilliant military tactician.
Specialty(Military Doctrine Focus) : Snipers/Marksmen, Defense, Survivability, Utility, Long-Term Logistics and Operations.
Blades Languages:
- English(American/Irish accents, primary language)
- German
- Polish
- Japanese
- Korean
- Malay
Uniform : A mix of German and American style military equipment with an emphasis on their high speed military doctrine and their aggression. Blades military equipment is also generally very ‘modernised’, using battery powered lamps and occasionally fabric ballistic armour(Late WW2 to Early Cold War).
Society : The Blades is a misogynistic nation, believing men are generally more capable than women, although they won’t openly admit that. They pride themselves on being a ‘modernised’ nation and being very advanced compared to the Crowns, their nation being a capitalistic democracy, but bureaucracy plagued everything behind the scenes. The Blades are led by a council of ‘Kings’, consisting of 25 men whom vote on major decisions, each one representing the 25 Sectors that make up the Blades’ territory.
Specialty(Military Doctrine Focus) : Shotguns/Automatic Rifles, Shocktroopers, Shock and Awe tactics, High Speed Attack, Mobility.
—SUB FACTIONS—
-
The Refuge : A small neutral force in the war that specialises in peace mediating negotiations and simply staying out of the way of the larger factions. They are a largely non-combatant force that relies on either the Blades or the Crowns for protection, and produces weapons and supplies for both sides. They earned their name, however, as they started taking in both refugees and defectors.
-
Bandits : Unsavoury characters whom decided to side with no one but themselves. Bandits often organise themselves into small gangs, looting and scavenging off the remnants of empty battlefields. They are poorly armed so they always try to avoid the main two armies, however, they also tend to attack the poorly guarded Refuge alongside any lone scavengers or wanderers. Many Bandit gangs are also made up of defectors from both sides.
-
Mercenaries : Soldiers who decided that coin would rather guide them than ideology. They often stick around and protect Refuge outposts, but aren’t explicitly affiliated to them. With the war dragging on for decades, both sides of the conflict have found the need for mercenaries for particularly grisly jobs and roles. They’re looked down upon by many people, but are still kept around as a necessity.
Technology :
1927-1940 : WW1/Interwar 1941-1953 : WW2 1953 and beyond : Cold War era
Past WW2 era technology, the world is frozen in an eternal Cold War era of development.
- Underground, Subterranean, Constant gunfire in the background.
- Crowns wear yellow and white, Blades wear black and purple
- The surface is covered in toxic fog, requiring gas protection to traverse, and is constantly being bombed.
- Different years mean different technologies.

Shortly after the end of World War 1, tensions only grew. The world divided itself into two distinct sides.
The Crowns, and The Blades.
Tensions between Crowns and Blades would reach a fever pitch in 1927 with the start of the Eternal War. The world would be bombarded by endless bombing runs and artillery strikes, creating a permanent toxic fog on the surface and rendering it inhospitable.
But whilst the surface died, the world moved underground, and this marked the true beginning of the Eternal War.

Deep in the caves...
You’re quietly drilling with some comrades through particularly hard rock to make room for an outpost. The sound of artillery and bombs going off echoes above you, and the sound of gunfire ringing through battlefields miles away rings through the caverns around and below you.
Steel crates with the insignia of the Refuge, a shovel and an olive branch, are hauled nearby. They’re filled with materials to beging construction on the foundations of the outpost as lamps are set up and begin the illuminate the caverns around you.
Through all the noise, you hear something else, however...

The rhythmic chugging and creaking of wheels carrying numerous carriages is the only thing to cut through the chatter of the others on board and the distant sounds of gunfire.
You are being deployed to the Northern Subterranean Front, and are being transported by a troop carrier, the steel walling of the armoured train the only thing separating you and your comrades from the darkness outside.
Suddenly, the door to the cabin burst open, an officer with a peaked cap and wearing the signature yellow and whites entered. On her cap, a pin depicting a crown.
She steps into the middle of the cabin as all chatter goes silent, some soldiers putting in their helmets and lowering their visors.
“We’ll be making touch down with the Operating Outpost in 3 minutes. I expect every one of you prepared for headcount and rollcall!”
And with that, she was gone, leaving through the door on the opposite side of the cabin to enter the next carriage and relay the same message.
Quietly, everyone goes back to what they were doing, some playing cards, others maintaining their equipment, but most just quietly chatting amongst themselves...

The slow beat of some song you don’t know the name of drifts in the air, the sound of drums and brass instruments filtered through the acoustic horn of a gramophone.
You weren’t told where exactly you had been stationed, only that you were in a region that was unusually quiet for the amount of supposed Crowns presence in the area. There was the occasional skirmish or clash of scouting parties, but seemingly neither side had encountered an outpost of the enemy just yet.
Your allies sit around, smoking, drinking, playing cards, or reading to pass the time, whether until the carnage will begin, or for the superiors to deem this sector secure and for you all to be called back.
The outpost itself was a medium sized well lit place, covered in sandbags and sturdy fortifications with several buildings littered around the foundations. A barracks, a mess hall, and a command tent. Banners draped over walls and near the centre of the outpost were flew the colours of the people you’re fighting for : a purple background to a white sword pointed downwards.
