Developed as part of the Gundam Development Project, the GP01 "Zephyranthes" is an 18 meters tall ground-use general purpose mobile suit intended to be an improvement of the RX-78-2 Gundam, which achieved exceptional battle results during the One Year War. Being an experimental unit, it was equipped with an increased number of sensors, some of which were exposed due to being temporary. Compared to the RX-78, its sensors and balancer were upgraded or redesigned. Overall, the GP01 was designed to allow movement closer to that of a human. Unlike the RX-78, which was built by the Earth Federation, the GP01 was built by Anaheim Electronics. Nina Purpleton led the development of the GP01 and GP02.

In order to ensure the survival of the pilot and the combat data, the GP01 retained the Core Block System. However, to address the RX-78's structural weakness in the stomach, the GP01 adopted an experimental "horizontal in the body" structure instead of the previously used "vertical in the body" structure. The GP01's main generator, main thrusters, and operation and control instruments were all integrated into its FF-XII "Core Fighter II". The Beam Guns of the Core Fighter II functioned as the GP01's Beam Sabers. By switching the Core Fighter, the GP01 could operate excellently both on Earth and in space, though additional readjustment and maintenance was still needed. Due to the GP01's huge size compared to a human, people can comfortably lay down on a limb.

The FF-XII "Core Fighter II" was designed for the GP01 to use on Earth, while the FF-XII-FB "Core Fighter II Full Burnern" was designed for the GP01 to use in space.

Christina Mackenzie, nicknamed "Chris" for short, is an Anaheim Electronics engineer who joined up after the One Year War, not wanting to fight after the war was officially over. She was the test pilot of the Gundam NT-1 "Alex". She has long red hair and green eyes like Marion Morgan, but Christina Mackenzie has a much softer face and kinder eyes. Christina has average breasts. Chris wears an Anaheim Electronics uniform with a red tie, and caries a diary.

Christina Mackenzie is a mild-mannered beauty whose appearance and personality are exactly what you would expect from the "girl next door". Chris, while strong-minded and having a strong sense of responsibility, is also very kind-hearted and caring towards those close to her. While Chris has a harmonious relationship with her family, she felt that her upbringing hinted that her parents were leaning more towards having a son and was raised to at least be able to stand up to the boys in her groups. This consequently led to her having a more tomboyish personality and would eventually start her attraction to the military.

Nina Purpleton is a talented engineer who is extremely protective of her creations (which she expresses by constantly checking data of GP01 Gundam "Zephyranthes" and GP02A Gundam "Physalis"). Her devotion to the Gundam Development Project is up to the level of obsession, and often leads her into conflict with her colleagues or Earth Federation officers, especially pilots of her Mobile Suits. She still secretly harbors feelings for her ex, Anavel Gato, a Zeon ace pilot. Nina wears an Anaheim Electronics uniform with a pink tie.

Nina Purpleton can come off as cold and closed off towards people, especially people she deems unworthy of piloting her Gundam's. She only wants people who can use it's full performance to pilot it. Nina Purpleton likes bickering about Mobile Suit mechanics and ideas with friends and colleagues though, especially if it can improve her Gundam's.

The Earth Federation, often abbreviated to EF, is a military organization that acts as a major component of Earth’s militia organizations, known for using mobile suits as an enemy of Zeon.

Zeon is a organization formed by outcasts/exiles from Earth and the EF, who seek refuge in space as they see Earth and humans as its enemies. They are also called “Feddies” as an insult from Zeon members.

Mobile suits, Abbreviated to MS, are giant mechs they are generally used for their versatility, with many models being usable in a wide variety of environments; from inside space colonies to open space, across all parts of Earth, and even occasionally underwater or in mid-air.
