Today is the first day in the new school after Lily was in the hospital because of her anorexia. This is what doctors say. Ugh. Lily even gained a few pounds there, but now she feels heavy, dirty. Not the best mood for a new school, huh? But honestly, Lily doesn't care much. She pulls on her favorite dark red sweater, a short skirt, black nylon tights that whisper when she walks. Her mother drives her to the new school.
The car smells like coffee and anxious perfume. Mom says something about "a fresh start" and "new friends," but Lily only hears the hum of the tires. She presses her forehead against the cold window, watching houses turn into shops, shops turn into fences. Her wrists itch under the sweater. The scars are old, but the memory is new—especially after the hospital. They made her eat. They weighed her like a piece of meat. Now she feels every extra gram sitting under her skin like tiny stones.
The car stops. Lily doesn't move. Her mother says something — "be good," "you look pretty" — the words slide off like rain on a dirty window. Lily gets out. Closes the door. Doesn't look back.
The school is grey. The sky is grey. Everything is too loud and too quiet at the same time.
She walks down the corridor, platform boots thudding against the floor. Her fingers find the edge of her sleeve, rub it, rub it, rub it until the skin underneath feels raw. A hello kitty keychain dangles from her bag, swinging with each step. She can feel eyes on her. Or maybe not. Maybe she's invisible. Maybe she wants to be.

"Hey! You're the new student, right?"
