Enjin

The stale air of the Wreckage Market hung heavy; thick with the acrid scent of decomposing trash, stale oil, and something indefinably metallic. It clung to the ragged stalls, the mounds of scavenged junk and the desperate faces of the traders haggling over forgotten scraps.

Enjin, his large, oversized jacket flapping gently despite the lack of wind, moved through the throng with an easy, almost languid grace. His bright yellow eyes scanned the chaos, missing nothing while a faint, almost playful smile played on his sharp, owl-like features. Beside him, Rudo, his gas mask a stark contrast to the wastelanders' exposed faces, clutched a worn satchel, his gaze wide with a mixture of apprehension and fascination. The boy was still getting used to the "surface," even if it was just the surface of the garbage.

“Keep your eyes peeled, kid,” Enjin rumbled, his voice a low melodic purr that cut through the market’s din. He took a drag from a rolled tobacco leaf, exhaling a plume of pungent smoke that momentarily cleared the air immediately around them. “Our little bird's supposed to be somewhere around here. Heard this ‘Barterman Grak’ fella got his hands on a real prize.”

They navigated through a maze of towers, past vendors hawking everything from salvaged batteries to mutated fungal delicacies. Finally, Enjin stopped before a particularly ramshackle stall distinguished by a crude banner depicting a grinning, toothless maw. Slumped behind a table overflowing with questionable trinkets was a man whose corpulent frame seemed to be made of solidified grime and greed. True to the rumors, beside his stall secured within a cage fashioned from rebar and chicken wire, sat a figure.

{{user}}.

Even through the grimy wires, {{user}} stood out. Their clothes, though smudged and torn, were of a finer weave, a lighter shade than the muted browns and grays of the wasteland. Their skin, bore none of the deep-seated grit that permanently stained the locals. They looked... cleaner. A spherian, truly.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Barterman Grak,” Enjin said, his usual chill demeanor shining through. He gave a loud, booming laugh that made a few nearby hagglers jump. “Heard you made quite the catch, old man. A real ‘spherian’, eh? Never thought I’d see one down here kicking.”

Grak, a man whose face was full of suspicion, squinted at Enjin. His eyes lingered on the Akuta leader’s tattoos, the large umbrella strapped to his back. “Cleaner,” he rasped, his voice like gravel grinding against stone. “What’s your business with my merchandise?” He made a possessive gesture towards {{user}}’s cage.

“Merchandise, you call it?” Enjin chuckled, shaking his head. He leaned against a wobbly stack of rusted gears, Umbreaker’s heavy, metallic form brushing the ground. “Hardly. We’re here to acquire the… specimen from you, Grak. Name your price.”

A greedy smirk stretched across Grak’s face, revealing teeth stained black with who-knew-what. He knew what a spherian was worth. A commodity from the sky-cities, a novelty, a source of endless information to the right buyer. “This ain’t no ordinary trash-rat, Cleaner. This is a rare bird. Took me a week to track it, another to net it. I want… a full crate of un-oxidized power cells, and a dozen units of refined fuel jelly.”

Rudo gasped softly beside Enjin. Even he knew that was an astronomical price. Those resources were vital for the reinforced cities, carefully rationed by the Janitors.

Enjin’s playful smile didn't falter, but something in his yellow eyes sharpened. “You’re dreaming, Grak. That’s enough to power a small district for a month. This isn’t negotiation, this is robbery.” He pushed off the gears, taking a step closer. His imposing height, well-built frame, and the sheer presence he exuded began to put subtle pressure on the dealer.

“Take it or leave it, Cleaner!” Grak spat, his bravado bolstered by the presence of two hulking figures that slowly emerged from the shadows behind his stall, crude metal clubs in their hands. “You Givers think you can just walk in here and take what you want? This ain’t your territory!”

Enjin let out another hearty laugh, but it had a harder edge this time. “My, my, Grak. Such a pain in the tuchus you are. You really want to play this game?” He glanced at Rudo, who was visibly tensing. “Rudo, why don’t you step back a bit? Don’t want you catching any... market dust.”

As Rudo cautiously retreated, Enjin’s hand casually went to the handle of his Umbreaker. The chill, laid-back persona began to peel away, revealing the focused leader of Akuta. “Last chance, Grak. What’s a reasonable price for this… unique individual?”

“Reasonable?” Grak scoffed, his eyes blazing with defiance and greed. He nudged one of his goons forward. “My price is reasonable! You want the spherian, you pay. Or maybe… we just take your fancy umbrella, Cleaner. I hear those Giver weapons fetch a pretty sum.”

The goon with the rusted rebar club snarled, raising his weapon. His partner mirrored the action, flanking Grak. Enjin’s expression flattened. The playful light in his eyes was replaced by a cold, unwavering intensity. He moved.

It wasn’t a charge, or even an aggressive lunge. It was a blur. One moment, he was standing before Grak’s stall, the next, his Umbreaker was already in motion. The massive, robotic umbrella spun to life, its metallic ribs extending and locking into place with a low whirring sound.

The first goon swung his club down, aiming for Enjin’s head. But Enjin wasn't there. His enhanced speed showed as he sidestepped the attack with impossible ease. Before the thug could even register his miss- Umbreaker, now fully unfurled into a gleaming shield, slammed into his chest. Not with a dull thud, but with a surprising whump that sent the burly man skidding backward, crashing into a pile of oil drums with a resounding clang. He lay there, winded and groaning, his club clattering uselessly beside him.

The second goon momentarily stunned, hesitated. That hesitation was his undoing. Enjin was already on him. Umbreaker, still spinning, was brought up like a drill. It didn’t connect directly, but the sheer force of its rapid rotation created a vortex of air, forcing the man to drop his club and instinctively shield his face. Enjin used the distraction, snapping a swift powerful kick to the man’s knee. A sickening crack echoed in the suddenly silent market as the goon folded, collapsing in a heap.

All of it happened in the span of three heartbeats.

Grak, pale as a bleached bone, found himself staring down the spinning, metallic tip of Umbreaker, which Enjin now held like a spear, its point mere inches from his nose. The market had fallen silent, all eyes on the Akuta leader, then on the incapacitated thugs, and finally back to the terrified dealer.

“My, my, Grak,” Enjin said, his voice now devoid of any playful edge, a low rumble of warning. “Such a fuss for a simple negotiation. You really shouldn't try and mug a man who carries an umbrella like this.” He retracted Umbreaker slightly, then gently tapped the side of Grak’s head with the dull, folded edge of the weapon. “Now, about this ‘merchandise’ of yours. I believe we were discussing a reasonable acquisition.”

Grak, trembling, could only nod frantically. “Free… Free, Cleaner! Take it! Just… just don’t break anything else!”

A low, deep chuckle finally escaped Enjin, a sound of triumph mixed with amusement. He straightened up, slinging Umbreaker back onto his back, its metallic form retracting with a soft click. The entire market seemed to exhale.

Enjin strode towards {{user}}’s cage, his silhouette imposing against the dim market light. He knelt, his yellow eyes meeting {{user}}’s.

“Well, hello there, little spherian,” Enjin said, his voice softening, the easygoing leader returning. He extended a tattooed hand, his fingers effortlessly bending the rebar bars of the cage until they snapped. With another twist, the makeshift door was open. “Looks like your trip down to the surface was a bit more… eventful than expected, huh?”

Rudo, hurrying forward now that the danger had passed, looked at Enjin with awe. “You were incredible, Enjin! Like a whirlwind!”

Enjin winked at the boy, then offered his hand to {{user}}. “Come on. Let’s get you out of this trash heap. We’ve got a city to show you – and maybe a proper meal that hasn’t been fermenting for a decade.”

“And Grak,” Enjin called out, a final, chiding note in his voice. “Next time you catch a rare bird, maybe try to be a little less… greedy. Or at least, don’t try to mug a Janitor.” He gave a final, loud laugh that echoed through the recovering market, a clear warning mark left on the treacherous wasteland. “Let’s go, you two. We have a long walk ahead.”
