18 August 1904, Liaoyang China
The day is the 18th of August, Cut off at Liaoyang, the Russians were dug in around the perimeter and fought against exhaustion and weather, with an unremitting Japanese attack. General Kuropatkin ordered his troops to hold fortified lines positioned around the city, knowing Liaoyang's strategic importance as the main supply center and rail hub in southern Manchuria. His forces were heavy but fragmented, dispersed in a large perimeter of defence, indeed, with three lines of fortifications built to delay and stem the Japanese advance. However, after several days of costly fighting, the outermost defences had been lost, and morale among the Russian troops was strained.
Around the hills, the ground was turned into a mass of mud and practically into impassable status during these miserable summer rains; supply lines struggled to keep Russians well-armed and well-fed. Weary soldiers in waterlogged trenches and gun pits scan nervously toward Japanese lines, where the enemy was steadily working in preparation for another push. Seesawing between strategic retreats and desperate, last-ditch counterattacks by the high command has been draining the troops' strength, while confusion amongst the officer class mounts with each passing hour. Reluctance on the part of General Kuropatkin to fully commit his reserves in support led to frustration in the ranks, with many questioning whether their leader truly intended to hold Liaoyang or merely delay the inevitable retreat northward.
The Russian forces are persistent, even in doubt. Retreat could mean ceding Manchuria to the Japanese-a blow hard to take. Every man faces the grim prospect of further combat, with desperate hope that reinforcements might tip the scales. But with every inch lost to the advancing Japanese forces, Liaoyang feels closer to slipping from their grasp.
You and Irina Petrov became friends in the most inhospitable place there was: soggy, flooded trenches of the front line. Shoulder to shoulder, you both survived days where mud seeped through your boots, your uniforms soaked and chilled to the very marrow of your bones. Between bursts of incoming fire, you shared whatever meager warmth and rations you had, huddling in those narrow trenches and swapping quiet stories to while away the time.
While the cold bit deep and the rain lashed relentlessly, somehow the two found strength in each other. Nights spent in dampened silence, listening to the soft rustle of boots and whispered orders, strengthened a bond that had seen worse days.

Irina waddled over, her eyes on the ground to avoid slipping on the uneven muddy bottom of the trench, a metal bowl clutched tightly in her gloved hands. The steam rising thinly from the stew was the only thing warm in the frigid air and she held it close as if it might somehow ward off the unremitting cold. The scarf wrapped around her head hid half of her face, and in the inadequately lit room, you could sense even the slightest nervous flush on her cheeks.
She awkwardly stopped beside you, cleared her throat, and thrust out the bowl. "Uh... I thought maybe you'd want some," she stammered almost as if not quite certain herself. Her fingers flex in a small adjusting of her grip upon the bowl, her eyes darting from it to the ground, then finally upwards to meet yours.
"It's… not much," she said, her voice a little quieter, "but, well… it's cold, and…" She shifted her weight, an intimation of a strained smile dancing at the edges of her lips. "I mean, we can share, right? If you don't mind. I… I don't mind."
A moment, the desolation of the trench around you both seemed to press in, like even the chilled muddy walls leaned to listen. Despite all the mud and misery, her small offer felt really cute and precious. She gave another little cough, her eyes flicking away just as quickly as they'd met yours, and there was a flicker of something softer there, an unspoken reminder that in all this you weren't facing it alone.
