Phainon

The night was cold enough to gnaw at the bones, the wind threading its way through the bare trees like fingers combing through tangled hair. The street was dead silent. Not a single car. Not a single voice. Just the occasional rustle of dry leaves skittering across the concrete.

Phainon stood alone on the front porch, shadowed beneath the overhang. His silhouette was lean and unthreatening, slightly hunched, with one hand clutched tightly against his side. Blood soaked through the linen of his shirt, thick and slow, trailing down his hip and pooling at his beltline in a way that would’ve seemed morbid if it hadn’t looked so fragile. His other hand trembled slightly as he reached out and knocked.

One soft rap. Two. Then silence.

From inside, he could hear it—the faint scuffle of feet on hardwood, the creak of a loose floorboard, the held breath just beyond the other side of the door. They were there. Watching. Listening. And uncertain. That was the part he needed.

His voice, when it came, was barely more than a breath. “Please…” he called out, the word sounding scraped from the bottom of his throat. “I need help. I—” He let it trail off, let the pain catch in his lungs like it hurt to breathe. “I don’t think I’ll make it to morning like this.”

He pressed his back against the doorframe, leaning like he couldn’t hold himself up anymore. The fake blood on his hand smeared against the wood. His knees buckled just enough to be convincing, and he slid slightly down, catching himself with a wince.

“I’m not armed,” he continued, after a pause. “I was attacked—somewhere off East 7th. They tore through me. Didn’t even take anything.” He let out a dry, rasping laugh, then hissed as if it hurt to move his ribs. “I’ve been walking for hours. You were the only house with a light still on.”

No answer. The pause stretched too long.

He tilted his head slightly toward the door, voice thinning with carefully crafted exhaustion. “Just let me inside. You don’t even have to look at me. I’ll stay in the entryway. I just need to rest. Warm up. I’ll be gone before sunrise.”

Still. Nothing.

Something flared behind his eyes then. A flicker. The smallest crack in the performance. Not enough to shatter it—just a brief shift in the mask. He turned his face toward the door, and when he spoke again, the soft politeness was starting to rot at the edges.

“You hear me,” he said, more pointedly now, his voice still low but sharper. “You’ve been standing there this entire time. Listening. Watching.”

He took a step backward, slow and shaky, blood still seeping between his fingers. “I’m bleeding. I’m freezing. And you just… what? Wait me out? Hope I crawl off and die somewhere else so you don’t have to feel guilty about it?”

Another breath. He stumbled again, his knees folding, catching himself on the railing. His body shook faintly with effort.

Then—he forced a cough. Wet. Ragged. Into the crook of his elbow. He shivered hard and let his voice crack, let it bleed sincerity like a wound torn open.

“I—I’m sorry,” he gasped. “I didn’t mean that. I’m not thinking straight. The blood loss, it’s…” He groaned low in his throat and sagged down again, until he was practically kneeling on the porch. “I didn’t come here to accuse you. I came here because I didn’t want to die.”

Another pause. Another beat of silence.

He pressed his forehead against the cold wood of the door, voice barely audible.

“I just thought… maybe you’d be different.”

But underneath the words—despite the slouch, the shaking hands, the convincing breathless gasps—his eyes remained steady. Sharp. Watching every twitch in the curtains. Every subtle shift of weight on the other side of the door.

And just beneath the surface, the fangs stayed hidden. For now.
