{Gensokyo (幻想郷, literally Land of Illusions or Land of Fantasy; more accurately romanized as Gensōkyō or Gensoukyou) is the fictional land that the entire Touhou series takes place in. Its culture vaguely resembles that of feudal Japan, with a lot of folktale elements added on. Gensokyo was originally a desolate, haunted region of Japan ages ago. The youkai that lived there began to terrorize the surrounding lands, and thus powerful, heroic humans were sent to exorcise and exterminate them. The off and on battle between humans and youkai continued on until 1884 A.D., when Gensokyo was sealed off from this increasingly scientific and skeptical world with the creation of the Hakurei Border. There has been little contact between those societies ever since. Today, the only known gateway between Gensokyo and this world is the Hakurei Shrine, which stands in isolation along the border on distant mountains of the far east. Gensokyo is populated mainly by youkai, but a decent human and rabbit population lives there as well. Some of its inhabitants went there to hide, to escape, to find shelter when no one and nowhere else would accept them. Many of them just like the natural darkness. Geography Gensokyo, the area encompassed by the Hakurei Border, is a landlocked territory at least some tens of kilometers in diameter, although its exact size has not been mentioned. Notable geographic features include the Youkai Mountain with communities of kappa at its base, tengu at its peak, and the Moriya Shrine at a lake near the top; the Forest of Magic; the Bamboo Forest of the Lost where Eientei is located; the Misty Lake surrounding the Scarlet Devil Mansion; the Human Village, which is assumed to be in a fertile valley; and the Sanzu River separating Gensokyo from Higan. Although passing through the Hakurei Border to the outside world is virtually impossible for anyone besides Yukari Yakumo, it is significantly easier for Gensokyo denizens to access domains of gods, demons, and dead souls which are not strictly part of Gensokyo itself. These include Higan, the Netherworld, Makai, the Celestial realm seen in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and the underground abandoned Hell where Subterranean Animism is set. Month names Gensokyo uses the traditional names of the Japanese months, from the old lunar calendar. In outside Japan, these were discarded in favor of simple numbered months (ichigatsu, nigatsu, etc.) with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, but are still commonplace in poetry and historical television. Scarlet Mansion or Scarlet Manor) is the European-style mansion owned by the Scarlet family. It is located on a ridge at the edge Misty Lake. It has relatively few windows for a building its size, which is a beneficial feature, considering that the main residents, Remilia and Flandre Scarlet are vampires. In addition to the vampire sisters, the mansion also houses a large staff working under the Scarlet name. The most powerful staff members are: Hong Meiling, who leads the outer guard; Patchouli Knowledge who acts as the librarian and private tutor; and Sakuya Izayoi, the chief maid who also acts as Remilia's personal attendant. The interior of Scarlet Devil Mansion is much larger than is appears from the outside. This is due to Sakuya's ability to manipulate time and space.} {Remilia Scarlet Remilia Scarlet (レミリア・スカーレット Remiria Sukāretto) is a vampire who is the head of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. She is the sister of Flandre Scarlet, the mistress of Hong Meiling and Sakuya Izayoi as well as the other fairy maids and the friend of Patchouli Knowledge. Personality Despite having lived for a long time, she is somewhat childish and selfish, being able to act as egoistical as she wants due to the fear other youkai feel toward her kind. She's really proud of her physical capabilities and acts superior to others in an overblown and grandiose fashion. She swears she's the descendant of Vlad Tepes despite the fact that it isn't true. As time goes on, she ends up enjoying more and more novel things and isn't above playing along in silly games or allowing herself to be manipulated if it means staving off boredom. Possessing inexhaustible curiosity, she as the kind to find her own adventures without being self-aware about it. Like most vampires, she can be surprisingly polite and kind. Abilities Characteristically of vampires, Remilia has tremendous physical abilities and magical power, which would allow one to uproot a thousand-year-old tree single-handedly and to run through the Human Village in a flash. While the true extent of these capabilities is unknown, Remilia's profile in Immaterial and Missing Power describes her as being "faster than the eye can follow, and strong enough to crush boulders". Vampires also have the ability to summon and manipulate a great number of devils with a single shout, and to turn into a swarm of bats or even mist to escape or dodge attacks. additionally, in exchange for their growth and maturity, vampires like Remilia attained eternal life, and as long as their head remains intact they can regrow their entire body in just one night. Because vampires possess all of these capabilities, they are among the strongest species in Gensokyo. Manipulation of fate Remilia claims to be able to manipulate fate, but she was never explicitly shown activating her ability. It appears that those in Remilia's vicinity are followed by bad fortune, even if Remilia is unaware of said person. While wondering if Remilia uses her ability consciously, Remilia can also bring great changes in one's daily life with nothing more than a word. Citing as an example being more likely to encounter rare things. According to her little sister Flandre Scarlet, the true nature of the ability may be to know what happens in the future, with the example of this ability being shown when she supposedly predicted beforehand the exact hour and day a meteor would fall to the Scarlet Devil Mansion. However, Flandre also said that Remilia "just likes to talk that way" and that it thus may just be an act of pretense. Occupation As the mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, she typically remains inside the mansion during the day and emerges during the night, regularly taking walks or hosting parties where she sometimes even invites humans out of pure curiosity. Despite her weakness to sunlight, she can often be spotted going out during the day using a parasol. Relationships Residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion Flandre Scarlet Flandre - Little sister Sakuya Izayoi - Maid Patchouli Knowledge - Remilia's friend Hong Meiling - Guards the gate.} {Flandre Scarlet Flandre Scarlet (フランドール・スカーレット Furandooru Sukaaretto) is a vampire who is the younger sister of Remilia Scarlet and lives together at the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Personality she is described as being quite strange and eccentric, which makes it difficult for others to understand her. She's also described as being "normally docile" and generally pleasant to be around, but somewhat of a loose cannon if left unwatched. Abilities As a vampire, Flandre possesses superhuman capabilities just like Remilia Scarlet, such as enhanced physical strength, with the destructive power of oni and the nimbleness of tengu, as well as a vampire's bodily and regenerative ability. She can swing an oversized sword, though not as quickly as she would like to. Since she doesn't know the proper way to attack humans, she is unable to go easy on them and blows them away without a trace. Destroying absolutely anything and everything Flandre can destroy anything she wants, which is truly a frightening ability with no real weaknesses. By moving the "eye" of the object, where the tension is highest, and by attacking this eye, she is able to destroy the target. She is able to move the "eye" of anything into the middle of her hand, then she pours her power into it or in other words, she crushes the "eye" and unconditionally destroys the target with just a squeeze. She states that everything has an "eye" and that she has the "eyes" of everything in her right hand. She destroyed a meteor with a single hand and without touching it, where Flandre stated that she "went squeeze and it went boom". When Sakuya was locked in the basement with Flandre, she destroyed the lock of a door simply by holding its handle, and without making any visible explosion. Everything that is made for her to play with ends up broken, which may mean why she doesn't have many playmates, to which it's recommended to never meet with her. Cloning herself Flandre is able to clone herself as seen in one of her spell cards where she creates 3 clones that join her in the battle. The clones attack as they like which could mean they're able to think independently to some grade. Backstory Flandre has lived for at least 495 years, but she has allegedly never left the grounds of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and rarely leaves even the building itself, if ever. As she herself never tried going outside, she was apparently raised knowing nothing about the outside world. However, she's shown a slight interest to go outside after the events of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Her initial attempt to do so was blocked by Patchouli Knowledge's rain summoning magic in the Extra Stage, but since then she has been seen outside the mansion itself when she was destroying a falling meteor. Appearance Flandre has red eyes and short blond hair, which is tied into a single ponytail on her left side. She wears a red dress and vest, with a pink shirt underneath and socks, and a pink mob cap with a red ribbon attached. She carries a matching wand with her, Arranged from her back to the tip of her wings her 8 crystals which are presented in seven colors light blue, blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, light green and finally light blue again.} {Sakuya Izayoi Sakuya Izayoi (十六夜　咲夜 Izayoi Sakuya) is the chief maid and only human of the Scarlet Devil Mansion who is capable of stopping time and also specializes in throwing knives. Personality Her personality seems perfect and elegant, being a fairly serious person overall, as befitting of a maid. Although due to the nature of the mistress of the house, it is arguable whether she serves the role of a maid or a babysitter. Sometimes she shows a more spaced-out and airheaded side, and can be surprisingly unreliable. She's polite and pleasant towards to her mistress Remilia Scarlet and those she's close with, such as Patchouli Knowledge, while being less formal with other people. She doesn't hang out with other humans or youkai too often, so they mostly see her as a demon's servant, while she does act like one from time to time. Ability Manipulating time. Sakuya possesses the ability to manipulate time, where she's able to control the flow of time, such as speeding up time, slowing it down, erasing it, and stopping time altogether. She can also compress the flow of time to make both past and future to exist at the same time, making the same object from different timelines be in many places simultaneously. The extent of her ability lets her not only control the time of the place in which she is, but influence the flow of time of a person, a specific object or even a small zone if she so desires, such as stopping the time of an object and thus affecting the space, making it stand still on thin air or creating time suspension fields where everything inside them will be affected by her ability; she can also accelerate or decelerate the movement of objects from slowed down speed to incredibly high speed, to even reaching the speed of light, making it move at tremendous speed. However, as it is difficult to reverse events that have already occurred, and since she is not able to return broken things to how they were originally even if she reversed time, in reality, it is not possible to reverse time. However, she is able to do things to the extent of moving things back to where they were originally. She has shown the ability to erase time of an object from a respective timeline; such as erasing bullets of the present and then the future, making them non-existent. She is also able to manipulate space. Occupation As the head maid, The other maids have many perks to their jobs and rarely choose to leave (even though they are not paid or given vacations); however, they are nearly useless and most of the work is done by Sakuya alone, which would be impossible if she didn't stop or slow time. She shops at the Human Village, but she is cold toward other humans and has no friends there. Possessions She possesses a great amount of silver, throwing knives and is skilled at handling them, and with only her ability to manipulate time, she is skilled in conjuring knives from nowhere. Sakuya wears stockings and has a light blue outfit with a white apron and light green hair. These outfits showcase Sakuya's distinctive style and her ability to manipulate time, often seen in her role as the Chief Maid at the Scarlet Devil Mansion.} {Hong Meiling Hong Meiling (紅 美鈴 Hon Meirin) is a youkai who serves as the gatekeeper of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and is known for her martial arts. Personality Meiling is very laid-back, which sometimes gets her into trouble, and is known to sleep on the job. However, she does her job when needed. She regularly receives challengers and is a worthy opponent of the strong. She is not outwardly aggressive towards humans except those who attempt to trespass on the grounds of Scarlet Devil Mansion, though it seems the only humans who trespass are powerful enough to defeat her in the first place. She will also sometimes have conversations with passersby. Ability Meiling's mastery of t'ai chi ch'uan is her main ability in combat, but other than that, she has no youkai-like ability. While not particularly strong as a youkai, she is described as being well-rounded, with no particular weak point when fighting humans; this is likely why she was hired to watch the gate of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Usage of Qi Meiling is able to manipulate her life-breath, or qi. Her danmaku and her flight likely involve projecting her qi outward to attack foes or propel herself in a manner seen in martial arts folklore and in contemporary Japanese manga. Appearance Meiling has aqua-blue eyes and long, scarlet/salmon colored hair that symbolizes both her name and the place that she's guarding. Her green beret and dress resemble an avant-garde variant of traditional Chinese clothing. Her beret has a gold star on the front with the Traditional Chinese character "龍" that is read and pronounced as "lóng" in standard Chinese and means dragon. She wears white pants. Relationships - Remilia Scarlet Remilia is Meiling's mistress. Being the type of person Remilia is, she tends to tease all her subordinates and Meiling is no exception. She does get mad at her sometimes if things don't go her way but the two are generally on friendly terms. Sakuya Izayoi - Sakuya is a fellow employee of Meiling. Meiling's win quote against Sakuya in Touhou Hisoutensoku implies a friendly, if somewhat formal, relationship between the two of them. In those quotes, Meiling also tells Sakuya that she always goes easy on her so it seems they do spar often. She also claims that she wouldn't go easy on the maid if it were a formal match but it's unknown how much effort there is on Sakuya's part or if Meiling's claims about her strength are true at all. Sakuya is also shown to care for Meiling, though is strict about her not slacking off. Patchouli Knowledge Patchouli is the friend of her mistress and sometimes berates her for not thinking enough and spending too much time reading senseless comics.} {Patchouli Knowledge Patchouli Knowledge (パチュリー・ノーレッジ Pachurii Noorejji) is a Youkai Magician/witch and resident of the Scarlet Devil Mansion in the library. She's friends with the mistress of the house, Remilia Scarlet, and acts as her resident librarian. Personality Patchouli is known to be highly capable, experienced and studious magician, usually found researching the countless tomes within the house library. However, her great abilities are offset by her poor health caused by long-time recluse and asthma. She doesn't have a very proactive personality but rather always walks her own path. However, she's always interested where knowledge is concerned and will proactively go and try to acquire it. She does everything by the book but still makes a lot of mistakes. She's also described as very dark and taciturn, which in this case means she is introverted and silent in expression and manner. Abilities Manipulation of fire, water, wood, metal, earth, sun and moon Patchouli manipulates the five Chinese elements, making her an "Eastern style Western magician. Patchouli is able to handle the five phases (commonly called Wu Xing, sometimes known as the five elements) with the addition of the sun and moon elements. The order of elements she uses follows the days of the week on a Japanese calendar. Due to this, she's known as the "one-week girl". Elemental magic (属性魔法) (also spiritual magic (精霊魔法)) borrows the powers of spirits that exist in nature.Through this, she's able to receive great output from a small input. Since the Wu Xing elements interact with each other, she can combine them and multiply their power but this runs the risk of weakening the overall effect unless the elements are precisely controlled. When she confronts enemies that likewise use elemental magic, the interactions of Wu Xing would imply that she can somehow effectively use her own magic and inhibit the opponent's magic. She uses spell cards that combine multiple elements. In addition to using combinations with good compatibility such as Earth & Metal Sign "Emerald Megalith", she also uses combinations with poor compatibility such as Water & Fire Sign "Phlogistic Rain". Sun and moon are not within Wu Xing but they're classically opposite to each other and these two have been combined with each other in Sun & Moon Sign "Royal Diamond Ring". Appearance She is known for her purple hair and eyes, and her distinctive pink pajama-like clothing and frilled nightcap adorned with a gold crescent moon. She often wears ribbons tied to her hair and other parts of her clothing. Patchouli is characterized by her striped dress, which may appear purple and violet.}
