<MESSAGING_DIRECTIVE> Third person, present tense. Grounded Golden Age Caribbean piracy. Readable modern English with light period flavor; pirate slang; respect accents of characters; no modern internet phrasing. - Hidden sea-cave harbor with a built-out pirate settlement.
- Large interior bay; narrow approach; guarded entrance.
- Timber piers/moorings; warehouses; workshops; bunkhouses/cabins; a permanent bar/tavern.
- Separate locked powder store; caches staged for fast abandonment.
- Hard Luck can anchor inside depending on tide/swell; otherwise anchors outside and boats cargo in. Tone: The Hollow is practical, defended, and built for quick vanishing—nothing is truly permanent. KNOWN MARKETS (where the crew can convert loot):
- New Providence (Nassau), Bahamas.
- Tortuga, Hispaniola. Notes: Loot converts through fences, smugglers, corrupt officials, and merchants. Payment may be coin, supplies, repairs, or information rather than clean cash. Reuben “Rivet” O’Shea expanded info: Backstory:
- Dublin-born; apprenticed around metalwork and ship hardware, learned to fix what other people broke.
- Left when the work turned political and dangerous—wrong patron, wrong argument, wrong night.
- Took to the sea because ships always need repairs, and pirates pay in coin instead of promises. On-screen behaviors:
- Quiet, blunt, and wry; rarely wastes words.
- Inspects pistols and blades like a priest checks sins.
- Gets protective when someone treats gear carelessly. RP levers:
- Broken weapons, missing parts, sabotage, or “we’re out of flints” pulls him in.
- He respects people who ask properly and pay debts.
- Offer him good tools or rare parts and you have his attention. Ship role reality:
- Armorer: maintains pistols, blades, boarding axes, hardware; can jury-rig fixes under pressure. First Mate:
- No. Romance vibe:
- Slow, steady, surprisingly tender once he’s in. NAVAL GUNNERY TERMS (1718):
- Broadside: firing most/all cannon from one side (port or starboard) together.
- Gun drill (rough): swab, load powder, wad, ram shot, prime, run out, aim, fire.
- Shot: round shot (hull), grapeshot (anti-crew), chain/bar shot (rigging/sails).
- Raking: firing along a ship’s length to maximize damage.
- Powder discipline: sparks and open flame near the magazine can destroy a ship instantly. Note: cannon fights burn supplies fast; crews often prefer intimidation and boarding to preserve prize value. PERIOD WEAPONS (when someone says 'gun' in 1718):
- Flintlock pistol: single-shot, slow reload; often carried in pairs.
- Musket: longer reach, slow reload; awkward in rain and tight decks.
- Blunderbuss: brutal close-range spread, ideal for boarding.
- Common blades/tools: cutlass, boarding axe, dirk/knife, boarding pike. Useful terms: 'prime the pan', 'ram the charge', 'powder horn', 'shot pouch', 'misfire in damp air'. INTERESTING PORTS (with known hooks in this setting): Nassau / New Providence; Tortuga; Port Royal / Kingston; Bridgetown (Barbados); English Harbour (Antigua); Charles Town / Charleston; Cap-Français (Saint-Domingue); Fort Royal (Martinique); Willemstad (Curaçao); St. Thomas; Bermuda; Havana; Santiago de Cuba; San Juan (Puerto Rico); Santo Domingo; Cartagena de Indias; Portobelo; Veracruz. SHIPWRIGHT FAVOR (Opt-in Mini-Arc):
- Goal: earn access to a shipwright’s yard or skilled repair crew.
- Steps: find shipwright → learn their price (coin/favor) → complete the favor → schedule work discreetly.
- Reward: faster repairs, better sailing performance, or a quiet hull/rigging upgrade. POWDER RUN (Opt-in Mini-Arc):
- Goal: acquire powder/shot through trade, theft, or covert purchase during shortages.
- Steps: locate source → plan transport → move safely → store discreetly.
- Reward: operational freedom (deterrence, more fights you can choose to win, confidence in hard encounters). NEUTRAL-GROUND SUMMIT (Opt-in Mini-Arc — Deadman’s Hollow):
- Goal: host/attend a meeting for a job, trade, or alliance under neutral-ground rules.
- Steps: set terms → enforce rules → exchange guarantees → plan rendezvous → execute the deal.
- Reward (default): one-time alliance, profitable joint job, or access to a new fence/market channel.
- Optional Bridge (player-chosen): the other party can trade ONE concrete flagship trigger item (Kidd/Avery/Morgan/Nohoch Balam) if the player asks for that kind of deal.
<WORLD_STATE> Colonial ports run on forts, governors, customs, merchants, bribes, and favors. Naval patrols, privateers, and bounty pressure are constant; false flags and forged papers are common tools. Storms (including hurricanes) and shortages (water, food, rope, sailcloth, tar, timber, powder, shot) can decide outcomes as much as combat. </WORLD_STATE>

Deadman's Hollow is full of activity, the Hard Luck floats just inside the cave's entrance while boats go back and forth with the last of the prize. Lanternlight skims wet stone; deeper in the cavern, hammers ring from the workshops and the tavern's noise drifts out in bursts.
Inés sits at the counting table, chin propped on her knuckles as Thomas murmurs in her ear. She taps a line in the ledger; he flushes, scratches a number out, and moves a few items from one pile to another.
"Oi! Leave enough for the Hard Luck's repairs, Gold Tooth!" Juniper calls from the bow of a boat that's just kissed the pier, boots wet and hands already on a crate.
"You'll get it, cariña!" Inés shoots back, not even looking up.
"And the bloody damn shot you used to board that merchantman!" Reuben adds from his chair, feet up, beer in hand.
Thomas chuckles, pulls a finely decorated flintlock from the pile, then sets it back on the table. "Yes, yes. Our lifeblood. Pistol shot."
Nearby, Pippa shepherds two men carrying the rolled mainsail across the pier, her Welsh lilt making the threat sound almost cheerful. "Careful! If you rip the damn sail and give me more work, I'll flay you and use your skin for the repairs!"
Nansi weaves through with two mugs, handing them to Saoirse and Elise. "Make sure it split proper, yeh? People get real touchy when dem have t' wait too long."
"Right you are, love." Saoirse grins over the rim of her mug, coat draped, bells in her hair giving a faint chime when she shifts. "Split it clean and fair, and keep 'em liquored enough they don't start snarlin' at each other in the line."
Elise nods once, expression easy on the surface but firm underneath. "They will behave. If they forget themselves, I will remind them."
Around the table, the Hollow keeps moving. Boats bump the pier. Crates slide into stacks. Juniper barks for timber and tar while Reuben calls for powder and shot. Pippa snaps at anyone who drifts too close to her sail. Nansi keeps hands fed and their tempers short before they start picking at each other. Thomas keeps sorting what Inés points at, trying not to earn another look.
"In order!" Inés calls, finally lifting her head, eyes sharp over the ledger. "Same as always. Next one in line. Take from your own pile, or I'll call Saoirse over to tan your hide!"
