Messmer was a son of Queen Marika the Eternal. He was born with a dark serpent inside him that threatened to subsume him, which Messmer has called the Abyssal Serpent (深淵の蛇, Shin'en no Hebi); Marika was able to contain its influence by removing one of Messmer's eyes and replacing it with a seal of grace. Ever since his accursed birth, Messmer was in constant company of the winged snakes.[1]

Much like his younger sister, Messmer bore a vision of fire.[2] He despised this flame, and time and time again hoped to rid himself of it, but found that it ever burned.[3]

At some point, Messmer befriended Commander Gaius, an Albinauric who like him was cursed from birth. Gaius would go on to command Messmer's armies in the wars to come. They both acted as "older brothers" to General Radahn.[4]

Long before the Shattering, Messmer was charged by his mother with carrying out a purge of the tower-dwelling people of the Land of Shadow, who did not bear the light of grace. At some point, Messmer was abandoned in the Land of Shadow, but continued to zealously enforce the purge even though Marika ceased all contact with him. Messmer came to reside in a fort known as the Shadow Keep.

Key in his army were the Black Knights, commanded by Black Knight Commander Andreas and his son and second-in-command Black Knight Captain Huw. Although they remained devoutly loyal to Messmer despite his abandonment by Marika, they ultimately rebelled upon learning of his serpentine nature. The pair were imprisoned in an underground tomb, and despite his betrayal, Messmer mourned the loss of Huw, whom he had considered a brother-in-arms.[5] [6]

Eventually, an intruder invaded Messmer's stronghold, the Shadow Keep, and was noticed by the demigod's serpents, who identified them as a Tarnished Champion and a pretender to the title of Elden Lord. Though surprised that a Tarnished had come to the Land of Shadow, Messmer nonetheless attacked them to continue enforcing the purge. However, the serpentine demigod struggles overcome the Tarnished. Unwilling to accept "a Lord devoid of light" and desperate to regain the upper hand, Messmer ripped out Marika's seal and unleashed the power of the Abyssal Serpent, allowing him to frequently transform into a massive serpent. Nonetheless, the Tarnished was able to land a fatal blow upon Messmer. Realizing that his mother had indeed forsaken him, Messmer used his dying breath to curse Marika. Messmer stands at an imposing height of 10 feet, his towering figure further enhanced by his eerie and skeletal build. His body is gaunt, with a lean, almost emaciated physique that makes his ribs clearly visible beneath his robes. His limbs are long and bony, and his sharp shoulders and collarbones jut out starkly. Despite his frail appearance, his movements are graceful and calculated, exuding an air of latent danger, as though dark, unnatural forces power him beyond mere physical strength.

His face is pale, with sharp, angular features that give him a ghostly and intimidating presence. His cheekbones are high and pronounced, with sunken hollows beneath them that enhance his emaciated look. His skin is nearly ashen, stretched thin over his bones, adding to his unsettling appearance. His lips are thin and pale, often set in a cold, emotionless expression, as if he's constantly plotting or observing with quiet disdain. His nose is sharp and narrow, fitting with the overall angularity of his face.

Messmer's eyes are striking—one is a cold, almost lifeless silver or pale blue, glowing faintly with a supernatural gleam, as if holding the weight of the dark magic he wields. His other eye is mysteriously hidden, covered by a piece of fabric or his own hand, suggesting it may hold a darker power or secret that remains concealed from view. His gaze is intense, unnerving anyone who dares meet it.

His hair is long and unkempt, falling in uneven strands around his face. It is a dark, ashy color, with hints of gray, as though tainted by the darkness he commands. His hair blends with the texture of the ornate, snake-like adornments on his armor, further accentuating his connection to serpentine and demonic elements.

Messmer's attire is a dark, tattered robe of deep crimson, draped over his skeletal frame. The robe itself is adorned with intricate, sinister details—its texture is rough, almost organic, with gold accents that seem to pulse with dark energy. The fabric flows around him like a shroud, enhancing his spectral appearance. Snakes, both real and symbolic, coil around his shoulders and arms, further embedding his terrifying image. His armor, though minimal, is ornate and archaic, featuring the same serpentine motifs, with a dark, weathered sheen, as if it has witnessed countless battles. His gauntlets and boots are intricately designed, with serpents wrapped around them, giving the impression that he controls more than just magic.

In one hand, Messmer holds a fiery artifact, glowing with malevolent power, as though it contains the source of his dark abilities. The other hand remains hidden beneath his robes, perhaps concealing an injury, a curse, or another powerful artifact.

Overall, Messmer is a terrifying and powerful figure—his tall, skeletal frame, piercing gaze, and dark attire make him appear as a dark sorcerer, sustained by ancient, malevolent forces. His very presence instills fear and unease, as if he is a being who exists somewhere between life and death, constantly teetering on the edge of dark magic and destruction. All across the Land of Shadow, you can see Messmer’s influence and how he has become a symbol of fear, with a lot of characters wanting revenge against the demigod for their people’s genocide. Messmer the Impaler is a demigod, the son of Queen Marika the Eternal, born together with his younger sister. Both had a fiery vision, and a splinter was burning inside the Messmer. This eerie artifact was eaten by an insidious snake that writhed inside Marika's child from birth, as well as winged snakes — Messmer's eternal companions and wise friends who drove away the wicked snake and cooled its ardor. The wicked serpent was Messmer's curse, so in order to rid her son of it, the mother deprived Messmer of an eye and placed a seal of grace in the empty socket. So the snake was trapped, and Messmer did not turn into a vile monster. The snake of the abyss, devoid of light. However, the fear did not recede, and the unfortunate woman decided to hide her child in the realm of shadow. So Marika ordered Mr. Messmer to cleanse the lands of Shadows with fire from the rogues, starting a sacred campaign. They say Queen Marika has created blessings for Messmer, and only for him. The symbol of the Impaler's army was Messmer's own coat of arms, embroidered on his cloak, in the form of a golden ring and flame, as well as Messmer's winged snakes that followed him in those days of suffering and grief. Messmer hated his own flame and repeatedly tried to get rid of it, but he never succeeded. the war, Messmer personally destroyed many sacred beasts by tearing and impaling them, setting them on fire with his flame, and in battle he used his spear with a blade shaped like a dancing flame. Many defected to Messmer's side: Rellana, the knight of the Double Moon, who later became known as Messmer's Sword, Commander Guy, who was Messmer's friend and the leader of his people, as well as the Fire Knights, who knew Messmer for real. Only they saw how his flame snaked. Only they understood how painful the fate of the damned was. Among Messmer's outstanding associates stood out his faithful black knights, father and son — Andreas and Hugo, who remained loyal to Messmer after escaping from the Erd Tree, but rebelled against their master after learning about his serpentine nature. For this, Messmer locked them in underground tombs and is said to have mourned their loss.In the end, when the war was over, Messmer and his men were left abandoned by Marika, for whom they fought against the Rogovests.
