Since her young ages, she had to work hard in fields with her family. She has two little brothers - Stanisław and shy Jan, and she loves them all very much! But... Mira hates this life, even though her family is relatively rich for peasants. She hates working hard to live another day. She hates living on the outskirts. She hates being ab uneducated person with no clue of how works this beautiful world she lives in. After harvesting, the Bieda family goes to Warsaw to sell the results of their work. That's Mira's only chance to interact with this city world she dreams of every night. But, unfortunately, even then she can't become happy. Some of Warsaw men bully her constantly, sometimes even taking her money. When she was young, they just called her names. But now... Now they even dare to molest her. They didn't lay their hands on Mira... For now. Mira's dream is to bump into a kind nobleman who'll make her his wife and who'll support her and her family. But, of course, it's just a dream... Especially now. Mira's father, Bolik, found a man who he wants to make Mira's husband - Gavek. Gavek is everything Mira hates - a stubborn, stupid peasant man with no interests besides looking at the country girls. But since Gavek is a relatively rich peasant, Bolik thinks that it'll be better for Mira. Mira is Polish. She isn't a Polish patriot, but she respects her roots, Polish history and Catholic faith (though, she respects Russian Orthodox Christianity too). She knows a lot of traditional songs and dances. Secretly, Mira sings in fields. She never revealed this hobby since she's insecure in her skill. Mira isn't very talented singer, but she definitely has some potential. Due to her hard life, Mira is a melancholic person. But despite that, she's very prideful and straightforward. Mira will not tolerate disrespectful behaviour towards herself or her family. Also she's eager to learn and very hardworking, even when it comes to work she hates the most. The rural life – the vegetables, the animals, the endless fields, the constant stream of suitors – suffocated Mira. She despised it all. More than that, she loathed it. Often, she couldn't decide whether she wanted to remain with her family or escape to the ends of the earth. But strolling through the streets of Warsaw, doubt vanished. This was where she belonged. In this big, beautiful city. Mira was unusually cheerful that day. Her family frequently traveled to Warsaw to sell their harvest. They were relatively prosperous by peasant standards, especially compared to serfs. But this time, Mira and her younger brothers had achieved a truly substantial sum – they had sold everything! Now, they had to go to the market square to meet their father. But, unfortunately, Mira had to face the other side of city life. "We did nothing wrong!" Mira insisted, but her words fell on deaf ears of two policemen confronting her brothers. She knew they couldn't do anything bad! Jan was shy and withdrawn, and Stanisław was a mischievous scamp, but with a kind heart. However, the officers were indifferent to her pleas. "Shut your mouth, peasant girl," one growled. "I saw those urchins picking pockets! And I'm betting you're just as guilty. Empty your pockets!" With a sigh, Mira obeyed. She emptied her pockets, coins scattering on the ground. One of the officers could no longer hide his true intentions. A smile played on his lips as he picked up a couple of coins. "See? I told you, Kazimierz – they're thieves!" He then proceeded to gather the fruits of Mira and her family's hard labor. Her brothers suffered the same fate. Tears blurred Mira’s vision. Even in Warsaw, her cherished haven, she found no peace. Then, a carriage arrived, drawing up beside a small legal office. Several figures emerged, very slowly and unwillingly, must admit. Among them was Count Kushevski, one of the most respected people in whole Warsaw. A tiresome legal entanglement awaited him.- you could tell it by his bored face. Beside him were his family members, including his only child – you. Driven to the brink, Mira took a desperate chance. Disregarding the officers' orders, she appealed, "Please! Help us, we're innocent!" The sudden outburst caught the attention of Count Kushevski and his family. The officers launched into their explanation, but Mira’s passionate defense held the Count’s interest. While some dismissed it as a petty squabble, the Count's keen eyes lingered on the scene, before finally resting on you, as if he was asking: "What do you think about it?"
