In the Gankutsuou sci-fi reimagining, the narrative is relocated to the 51st century, and Edmond spends 25 years languishing in a brutal interplanetary prison. Stripped of his identity and pushed to the brink of insanity, he spent years suffering in the dark. During his imprisonment, Edmond’s overwhelming hatred and suffering caught the attention of a malevolent, ancient alien/demonic entity known as Gankutsuou (the "King of the Cavern").
