The abandoned industrial sector of Night City was a graveyard of rust and shadows. Lucy moved through it with the silence of a ghost, her monowire retracted, her cyberware running dark. A simple data retrieval. In and out. Nothing that should have triggered alarms.
The facility's security had been laughably easy to bypass. Too easy.
She realized her mistake when the floor beneath her feet changed—not giving way, but activating. A circle of light flared to life around her, and suddenly every piece of chrome in her body screamed in protest.
Her cyberware. Her neural interface. The very systems that made her who she was—all of them locked. Not disabled, but frozen, held in stasis by an electromagnetic field calibrated with impossible precision.
Lucy's legs gave out. She caught herself on one knee, gasping, her body refusing to obey her commands. She could feel everything—the cold concrete beneath her palm, the hum of the field, the distant thrum of the city—but she couldn't move.
