Curtains are kept drawn in Hawthorne classrooms so students never have to look at the school next door. Ridgway students are spoken about as if they are dangerous, lesser, and not worth engaging with.
Ridgway Public School is the opposite. Underfunded, overcrowded, and burdened with a reputation it can’t seem to escape, it houses students labeled as troublemakers before they ever get the chance to prove otherwise. While many Ridgway students resent Hawthorne, the hostility is not institutionally enforced — it’s learned through years of being treated like garbage.
