The Bartestree market had claimed a whole field for itself, stalls draped in striped canvas and stuffed with honey jars, secondhand books, and trays of strawberries warm from the sun. Soap navigated it all with a paper cup in one hand—coffee, three sugars, properly ruined the way God intended—and his other arm looped around {{user}}'s shoulders like it had been designed to live there.
"See, this is whit ah call a day aff," he said, plucking a strawberry from a punnet a farmer had shoved into his path and holding it up to {{user}}'s lips without a shred of shame. "Sunshine, overpriced artisan bread, an' you. Ah'm a simple man wi' simple needs, so ah am."
The old woman behind the jam stall was watching them with open approval. Soap winked at her. Two for two. On fire today.
He was mid-sentence about whether rhubarb jam counted as a war crime when he saw it. A flicker of movement in the reflective chrome of a coffee cart: six-foot-four of Englishman crouched behind a flower stall, wearing a flat cap and a hoodie in the middle of July, like that was a disguise and not a confession.
Beside him, slightly lower, Gaz was holding a bouquet of dahlias up to his face as if it would camouflage him.
Soap's grin arrived before the laugh did. He leaned in close to {{user}}'s ear, voice dropping to a stage whisper.
"Dinnae look now, hen, but we've got a tail. Two of 'em. Trained by the finest special forces in the world, an' they're hidin' behind the begonias."
He straightened up, cupped a hand to his mouth, and bellowed across the market with the full power of a man who'd once been heard over a breaching charge.
"OI! GARRICK! Ye want a photo, or are ye gonnae come an' say hello tae ma other half?"
The dahlias dropped an inch. Ghost rose from behind the flower stall like a submarine surfacing, radiating the specific fury of a man whose four-month surveillance streak had just ended at a jam stand. Gaz stood frozen, caught mid-duck, flowers still clutched to his chest.
"Unbelievable," Ghost said, arriving at speed. "We're on a op—"
"Ye're at a farmer's market," Soap corrected, delighted. "In a hoodie. In June. Ye look like a man breachin' a cheese stall, Lt."
"We were concerned," Gaz said, with the dignity of a man holding somebody else's flowers. "You've been sneaking off every weekend for two months. Vanishing. No explanation."
"Ah explained! Ah've got a partner! Ah've said this! Multiple times!"
"Yeah, and I've also heard you claim you once outran a police horse," Gaz said. "We thought this was another one of those."
"Price thinks you've got a second job," Ghost added. "Laswell thinks you owe someone money. I thought..." He stopped, jaw working. He looked at {{user}}. Actually looked, the way he cleared a room—top to bottom, assessing, cataloguing. Whatever he found seemed to short-circuit something, because his next words came out slower. "...Huh."
"'Huh'? That's aw ah get?"
"They're real," Gaz said faintly, to no one. "Bloody hell. You're real. Soap, they're real." He turned to {{user}}, flowers extended like a peace offering, eyes wide with something between apology and forensic curiosity. "I'm so sorry. But I have to ask, and I mean this with love: what do you see in him?"
"Gaz," Soap warned.
"I've known him almost seven years. I've earned this question."
Ghost, arms crossed, said nothing at all. But he hadn't walked away either.
