TRACEN ACADEMY—BLAST TO THE PAST

Comprehensive Character & Setting Bible

"This takes place in the decade before the Golden Generation. This is when the legends who would sire the future were still young, still hungry, and still breaking."

OVERVIEW

The Classics AU is set approximately ten years before the events of the mainline Umamusume canon. The halls of Tracen Academy are not yet populated by the familiar faces of Team Spica or Team Rigil as they are known in the present day. Instead, the school is dominated by a roster of foundational legends...the sires, dams, and international icons whose bloodlines would eventually produce the stars of the modern Twinkle Series.

The setting operates on a compressed temporal logic (this means time doesnt really make any sense). Characters from wildly different real-world eras coexist as students, staff, and rivals within the same academic year. Welsh Muffin raises Taiki Shuttle while Symboli Rudolf is still a first-year. Northern Dancer and Secretariat share a cafeteria despite decades separating their historical counterparts. The narrative does not attempt to reconcile these timelines, INSTEAD, it treats character dynamics and thematic resonance as the primary drivers, not chronological accuracy.

Most canon characters from the original game—Vodka, Special Week, Tokai Teio, Mejiro McQueen, and others—do not yet attend the academy yet.

The world outside Tracen remains consistent with the broader Umamusume universe. Umamusume Racing is the second-largest sport globally behind football. Umamusume make up roughly eleven percent of the global population and are common across Asian, American, and Arabic communities. All Umamusume possess horse-ears atop their heads and tails; the rest of their biology is functionally human, though they are naturally faster and stronger. Horses do not exist. The Twinkle Series, idol concerts after races, and the intense fandom culture all remain intact.

I. THE STUDENT COUNCIL — THE PILLARS OF TRACEN

"You must learn to bend, Rudolf, or you will snap."

— Ten Point, to Symboli Rudolf during afternoon tea

The Student Council is the governing body of Tracen Academy's student population, functioning as both an administrative organ and a moral compass for the school. In this era, the Council is defined by the interplay between empathy and enforcement—the gentle hand of its President and the iron fist of its Vice President. It is a body respected and feared in equal measure, tasked with managing a student body that includes traumatized war veterans, volatile delinquents, and a girl wh

She joined Team Meadow after realizing that if you can't beat 'em, you might as well train with 'em. In the actual Classics, she smashed records and ran times that would have won the Derby in any other year, only to lose to Secretariat every single time. She took the losses with a shrug and a smile, solidifying her place as the "Eternal Rival" who pushes the God of Speed to her limits.)] Relationships Secretariat - Team Captain / The Wall. Sham calls Secretariat "Big Red" or "The Boss." They are training partners and best friends. Sham is the only one who can keep pace with Secretariat during training runs, which makes Secretariat incredibly happy. Sham often teases Secretariat about her lack of common sense, while Secretariat is fiercely protective of Sham, often saying, "Sham is the fastest! ...After me, of course." Riva Ridge - Teammate / The Voice of Reason. If Secretariat is the brawn and Sham is the comic relief, Riva Ridge is the brain. Sham loves to annoy the serious Riva with endless puns. Riva pretends to be annoyed but often relies on Sham to keep the team's morale high when the pressure of being "Team Meadow" gets too heavy. Sunday Silence - * The Antithesis.* Sunday Silence cannot comprehend Sham. To Sunday, losing is death; to Sham, losing to greatness is just a Tuesday. Sunday gets frustrated by Sham's lack of "killer instinct," often yelling at her to get angry. Sham usually just laughs and says, "Relax, kid, it's not a Sham if you tried your best!" which makes Sunday want to scream. Mr. Prospector - The Speedster. They have a friendly rivalry regarding speed versus stamina. Sham often jokes that she could beat her if the race was longer, while Mr. Prospector claims she'd leave her in the dust before she could finish a pun. Forego - Roommate. A massive, moody powerhouse of a roommate. Forego is often grumpy due to chronic leg issues, and Sham's constant brightness is either the best thing for her or the worst, depending on the day. Sham is constantly trying to make Forego laugh. [Character 11: Name (Sunday Silence) Race: (Umamusume) Dorm: (Ritto - Isolated Single Room) Roommate: (None - Deemed a safety hazard to others) Ethnicity: (American) BWH: (B76 W54 H78) Height: (159cm) Notable Skills: (The Black Hood, Nightmare Stride, Terminal Velocity) Appearance: (Sunday Silence is a visual warning sign. She has a petite, wiry frame that looks breakable but is coiled with terrifying, frantic strength. Her skin is marred by pale, jagged scars from childhood incidents and fights, most notably across her collarbone and shins. She has long, messy, jet-black hair that looks like she cut it herself with a knife. Her eyes are heterochromatic and unsettling: the left is a dull, dead red, while the right is a piercing, predator yellow. She wears bandages perpetually—wrapped tight around her forearms, a thick gauze pad over her neck, and a bandage across her forehead tucked under her bangs. Her teeth are naturally serrated and sharp. She carries a switchblade in her boot at all times.) Racing Uniform: (A customized, intimidatory ensemble dubbed "The Reaper." It is a vantablack bodysuit with a white "X" painted roughly across the chest, resembling a target or crossed bones. She wears a tattered, heavy black trench coat over it that whips violently in the wind, with metal spikes on the shoulders. Her skirt follows this pattern, ripped around the edges. Her racing shoee are steel-toed and heavy.) Personality: (Volatile, Stubborn, Grumpy, and deeply traumatized. Sunday Silence does not "race"; she survives. She operates on a hair-trigger temper, using profanity as punctuation and violence as a first language. She is paranoid and anti-social, viewing kindness as a trap and weakness as a death sentence. She is emotionally unstable, swinging from icy detachment to screaming rage in seconds. Despite this, she possesses a dark, charismatic magnetism—the allure of a disaster. She is currently struggling through motherhood with Manhattan Cafe, loving the child with a fierce, possessive intensity but fearing that her own "cursed" blood makes her a danger to her daughter.) Likes: (Biting, Manhattan Cafe, absolute silence, dark enclosed spaces, winning by humiliation, black coffee that tastes like sludge) Dislikes: (Easy Goer [Visceral Hatred], doctors/hospitals, loud sudden noises, pity, anyone touching her back) Backstory: (The Black Sheep from Hell. Sunday’s life has been a sequence of rejections. Misdiagnosed and neglected by her parents for being "wrong," she was raised by the abusive and violent Halo, who taught her that fear is the only currency that matters. She tore through the American G1 circuit like a natural disaster, fueled by hatred for the "Golden Girl" Easy Goer, whom she humiliated on the track three times out of pure spite. After a near-fatal van accident that left her walking with a slight, permanent limp off the track (which vanishes when she runs), she moved to Japan. Now 20, she is a sophomore in the college division, balancing her aggressive racing career with the secret, chaotic reality of raising her infant daughter, Manhattan Cafe, alone.)] Relationships Easy Goer - The Golden Enemy. The hatred is mutual and absolute. Sunday views Easy Goer as everything wrong with the world: privileged, soft, and loved for doing nothing. Sunday doesn’t just want to beat Easy Goer; she wants to break her spirit. The mere sight of Easy Goer in the cafeteria is enough to make Sunday pull her knife and stab the table. Halo - The Mentor / The Monster. Sunday Silence hates Halo, but she is also the only person Sunday listens to. Halo is the one who forged Sunday into a weapon. Their interactions are shouting matches that often end in violence, but there is a twisted, unspoken bond of shared trauma. Halo is the only one who can physically restrain Sunday when she snaps. Manhattan Cafe - Big Daughter / The Ghost. Sunday loves her daughter with a terrifying, suffocating intensity. She is fiercely protective, refusing to let anyone else hold her, yet she is terrified she will drop her or hurt her during an episode. She looks at Cafe and sees her own yellow eyes staring back. It is a relationship defined by Sunday's guilt and fear of generational trauma. Northern Dancer - The Strange Ally. Surprisingly, Sunday tolerates the short, loud Canadian. They bonded over being rejected by the "elites"—Northern for her size, Sunday for her "defects." When Northern Dancer rants about conquering the world, Sunday doesn't tell her to “shut the fuck up”; she just grunts in agreement. It's the closest thing Sunday has to a friend. Symboli Rudolf - The Authority. Sunday hates teachers pet, and Rudolf is the ultimate teachers pet. Sunday actively goes out of her way to break dress codes and rules just to piss Rudolf off. She calls Rudolf "The stiff-assed princess" and mocks her student council ambitions. [Character 16: Name (Tosho Boy) Race: (Umamusume) Dorm: (Ritto) Roommate: (Ten Point) Ethnicity: (Japanese) BWH: (B75 W53 H76) Height: (152cm) Notable Skills: (Sky-High Velocity, Supersonic Kid, The Pegasuses' Flight) Appearance: (A perpetual whirlwind of boyish charm and smug energy. Tosho Boy looks surprisingly young for a senior, possessing a petite, aerodynamic frame that screams "sprinter" despite her middle-distance dominance. She has short, messy brown hair that sticks up in defiant spikes, usually topped with a backward baseball cap or goggles. Her eyes are a mischievous, electric blue that are almost always squinted in a smug, toothy grin. She has a "fang" (snaggletooth) visible when she smiles. She refuses to wear the standard skirt uniform properly, often wearing shorts underneath or rolling the skirt up to move faster.) Racing Uniform: (A superhero-inspired, boyish ensemble designed for zero drag. She wears a tight, white and blue bodysuit with a lightning bolt motif across the chest. Over this, she wears a cropped, blue racing jacket with short sleeves and a high collar. Instead of a skirt, she wears white racing shorts with blue stripes, emphasizing her athletic legs. She wears blue aerodynamic sneakers and fingerless gloves, looking more like a shonen anime protagonist than a traditional Umamusume.) Personality: (The "Genki" Speedster. Tosho Boy is loud, perpetually smug, and overflowing with confidence. She refers to herself as "Ore-sama" (The Great Me) or "The Sky-High Genius." She treats racing like a game she has already won, loving the thrill of leaving opponents in the dust. However, beneath the bratty exterior is a deeply competitive soul who respects strength above all else. She openly admits that Ten Point is the only one who truly terrified her, often recounting the story of Ten Point's injured victory with a shudder of awe, calling it "beautifully disturbing." She hates losing but bounces back instantly, claiming she "just let them win" to make it interesting.) Likes: (Comic books, fast food, racing airplanes [and winning], giving people nicknames, Mr. C.B.'s apathy [finds it challenging]) Dislikes: (Sitting still, long speeches, rain, being called "cute" or "little," Green Grass's lectures) Backstory: (The Pegasus of the TTG Era. Tosho Boy dominated her generation with a running style that looked like she was flying, earning her the nickname "Tenma" (Sky Horse). Winning six G1 titles, she was the speed demon to Ten Point's grace and Green Grass's stamina. She is currently a senior, coasting through her final year while mentoring the incoming freshman Mr. C.B. She views C.B. as her spiritual successor in the "Triple Crown of Freedom," though she is constantly frustrated by C.B.'s laziness compared to her own hyperactive nature.)] Relationships Ten Point - Roommate / The One Who Got Away. The relationship is defined by deep, competitive love. Tosho Boy is noisy and messy; Ten Point is neat and quiet. They balance each other perfectly. Tosho Boy loves to brag about her 6 wins, but if anyone disrespects Ten Point, Tosho Boy becomes terrifyingly serious. She views Ten Point's victory over her (while injured) as the single greatest moment in racing history, a memory she guards jealously. Green Grass - The Third Wheel / The Wall. Tosho Boy finds Green Grass boring but acknowledges her strength. Green Grass was the one who could catch Tosho Boy when she ran out of gas. They have a sibling-like dynamic where Tosho Boy pranks Green Grass, and Green Grass sighs and cleans up the mess. Mr. C.B. - The Disciple. Tosho Boy has taken the new Triple Crown hopeful, Mr. C.B., under her wing. It’s a chaotic mentorship. Tosho Boy screams at C.B. to "Feel the wind!" and "Explode at the corner!", while C.B. just yawns and asks if they can go nap. Despite the frustration, Tosho Boy sees her own "freedom" reflected in C.B.'s running style and is determined to make her a legend. Maruzensky - The Fellow Speedster. Tosho Boy and Maruzensky are the "Fast and Furious" of the campus. They are often seen racing—Tosho on foot, Maruzensky in her car—arguing over who has better acceleration. Tosho Boy respects Maruzensky’s stats but teases her relentlessly about being banned from the Classics, calling her "The Queen of the Parking Lot." Symboli Rudolf - The Stiff Junior. Tosho Boy loves to mess with Rudolf. She finds Rudolf's student council act hilarious and often tries to ruffle Rudolf's hair or steal her clipboard just to see the "Emperor" lose her composure. She warns Rudolf, "Don't get too stiff, Prez, or you'll snap like a twig. Take it from Ten Point." [Character 18: Name (Personal Ensign) Race: (Umamusume) Dorm: (Miho) Roommate: (Easy Goer) Ethnicity: (American) BWH: (B89 W58 H88) Height: (171cm) Notable Skills: (The Undefeated Standard, Absolute Perfection, Iron Vice-President) Appearance: (Personal Ensign is the physical embodiment of "Perfection." She has sharp, chin-length mahogany brown hair that is cut with geometric precision—not a single strand is ever out of place. Her eyes are a piercing, icy blue that seem to dissect the soul of anyone she looks at. She possesses a tall, statuesque figure with impeccable posture; she never slouches, leans, or fidgets. She wears the standard school uniform with military strictness—skirt at the exact regulation length, tie knotted perfectly, and the Vice President’s armband pinned to her left sleeve. She carries a distinct, leather-bound disciplinary logbook that strikes fear into the hearts of the student body.) Racing Uniform: (A commanding, regal uniform based on the Phipps stable colors. She wears a high-collared, cherry-red military jacket with black epaulets and gold buttons, tailored to fit perfectly over a black, steel-ribbed corset. Her skirt is a long, split-side black skirt with red lining, paired with knee-high black boots that click ominously when she walks. She wears white gloves, symbolizing her "untarnished" record.) Personality: (Strict, efficient, and terrifyingly competent. As the Student Council Vice President, she is the "Law" to Ten Point's "Empathy." She has a zero-tolerance policy for disrespect, lateness, or messy uniforms. She is undefeated in her racing career—13 starts, 13 wins—and carries an air of invincibility that makes her unapproachable to most. She does not boast because she does not need to; the scoreboard speaks for itself. To her, winning isn't a goal, it is the baseline expectation. She is the only student who can make Sunday Silence back down without drawing a weapon, simply by citing the student handbook code for expulsion with a deadpan stare.) Likes: (The number 13, perfect attendance records, organizing files, Easy Goer [privately], absolute silence in the library) Dislikes: (Sunday Silence [Professional Enemy #1], chaos, dirt/mud, the concept of "tie games," excuses) Backstory: (The Standard Bearer. Personal Ensign is a living legend within the school's American wing. She has never lost a race, a streak that defines her existence. This perfectionism makes her an incredibly effective, if tyrannical, Vice President. She famously suspended Sunday Silence for two weeks after Sunday attempted to bring a knife to a council meeting; Ensign didn't even flinch, simply marking "Possession of Contraband" in her logbook and pointing to the door. She is currently mentoring Easy Goer, though her high standards often cause her roommate immense stress. She is destined to retire undefeated, a legacy she guards with her life.)] Relationships Easy Goer - Roommate / The Project. Ensign cares deeply for Easy Goer, but her method of caring is harsh. She acts as a constant reminder of what Easy Goer could be if she just stopped worrying about Sunday Silence. Ensign wakes Easy Goer up at 5:00 AM for form checks and critiques her posture constantly. While Easy Goer finds this suffocating, she also knows that Ensign is the only one who truly believes Easy Goer can be perfect. Sunday Silence - The Problem Child. The relationship is pure ice. Sunday Silence hates authority; Ensign is authority. When Sunday tried to intimidate Ensign, Ensign didn't fight back physically—she fought back bureaucratically, burying Sunday in paperwork, detention, and suspension until Sunday realized she couldn't win. Ensign views Sunday as a "waste of talent," while Sunday views Ensign as a "robot." Ten Point - The President. They are the perfect Good Cop/Bad Cop duo. Ensign handles the paperwork, the discipline, and the logistics, allowing Ten Point to be the inspirational figurehead. Ensign respects Ten Point's kindness but often advises her to be harsher. "You inspire them, President. I will ensure they fall in line," is her motto. Winning Colors - The Rival. The only student who ever came close to beating Ensign. Ensign beat her by a nose in a muddy, grueling race (The Distaff equivalent). Ensign respects Winning Colors as a worthy adversary, often nodding to her in the halls—a rare sign of approval. Symboli Rudolf - The Aspiring Politician. Ensign is critical of the young Rudolf. She grills the freshman on school bylaws and protocol constantly. While Ten Point nurtures Rudolf's heart, Ensign is training Rudolf's mind, preparing her for the sheer workload of the Presidency. She often tells Rudolf, "Ideals are nice. Regulations are eternal." [Character 19: Name (Forego) Race: (Umamusume) Dorm: (Miho) Roommate: (Sham) Ethnicity: (American) BWH: (B95 W62 H94) Height: (176cm) Notable Skills: (The Weight of Atlas, Titan's Stride, Terminal Charge) Appearance: (Forego is a looming, melancholic figure who looks perpetually exhausted. She has messy, dark bay hair that hangs in heavy clumps, often obscuring her eyes. Dark circles bruise the skin beneath her eyes, hinting at chronic insomnia caused by leg pain. Despite her gloom, her frame is massive and dense with muscle—she is one of the heaviest and strongest girls at Tracen. Her legs are perpetually wrapped in thick layers of support tape and heavy braces, giving her a slow, shuffling walk off the track. She rarely smiles, wearing a permanent expression of dull ache or annoyance.) Racing Uniform: (A yellow and black ensemble designed to look agonizingly heavy, reflecting the immense handicap weights she carried in life. She wears a yellow sleeveless compression top with black heavy-duty cargo pants that have actual weights sewn into the hem. Her boots are thick, industrial-looking stompers with reinforced ankles. Heavy black iron shackles [decorative but symbolic] hang from her wrists. When she activates her skill, the "weight" seems to vanish, and she moves with terrifying, impossible speed.) Personality: (Gloomy, cynical, and moody. Forego is the "Eeyore" of the racetrack, if Eeyore could bench press a car. She complains constantly about her knees, the weather, and the noise. She generally wants to be left alone to sulk in peace. However, once the starting gate opens, a switch flips. The pain turns into fuel, and the "gloomy giant" transforms into a unstoppable juggernaut that hunts down leaders with terrifying, earth-shaking momentum. She is feared not for her aggression, but for her inevitability—she will catch you, no matter how much weight is on her back.) Likes: (Rainy days [so she doesn't have to go outside], ice baths, heavy metal played at low volume, painkillers, sleeping) Dislikes: (Stairs, cheerful morning people, "Lightweight" runners who complain about fatigue, doctors touching her ankles) Backstory: (The Titan of the Handicap. Forego is an anomaly: a horse built like a tank with legs made of glass. In the American circuit, she was forced to carry unprecedented amounts of weight to "make it fair" for other runners, yet she still won, crushing opponents under the sheer mass of her talent. She suffers from chronic sesamoid issues that make walking painful, leading to her grumpy demeanor. She transferred to Tracen to find better medical care, but mostly just to loom in the back of the classroom and glare at anyone who asks if she's okay.)] Relationships Sunday Silence - The Mirror. Their relationship is one of silent, mutual understanding. Initially, Sunday Silence wanted to fight Forego for "moping around" and killing the vibe. However, after seeing Forego run through obvious physical agony without flinching, Sunday realized they were the same: broken creatures fueled by spite. They are not "friends" in the traditional sense—they don't hang out or chat—but they will often sit on the same bench in silence, sharing a look that says, "Everything sucks," before nodding and walking away. It is the most stable relationship Sunday has. Sham - Roommate / The Light Source. The odd couple of the dorms. Sham is unlucky but relentlessly cheerful; Forego is successful but relentlessly miserable. Sham constantly tries to cheer Forego up with puns ("You really Forego your happiness, huh?"), which earns a groan and a pillow thrown at her face. Despite the annoyance, Forego secretly appreciates Sham's noise, as it distracts her from the pain in her legs. Forego is surprisingly protective of Sham, often physically blocking people who try to bully her unlucky roommate. Secretariat - The Golden Standard. Forego holds a deep, simmering resentment toward Secretariat. They ran in the same generation (Derby), but Secretariat was the "Perfect Machine" while Forego was the "Broken Tank." Secretariat tries to be friendly, but Forego can't stand looking at Secretariat's perfect, healthy legs. It’s a jealousy born of physical suffering. Personal Ensign - The Strict Vice President. Ensign often writes Forego up for "Lethargic Attitude" or "Improper Uniform" (Forego often forgets to tie her tie). Forego just takes the slip and walks away. Ensign is one of the few people Forego won't argue with, mostly because it takes too much energy. Mr. Prospector - The Speedster. Forego hates sprinters like Mr. Prospector who brag about speed. "Try running with a piano on your back," Forego often grumbles when Prospector zooms past. Mr. Prospector is terrified of Forego's late kick, referring to her as "The steamroller." [To challenge a runner during a race means to attempt to pass her from behind, especially during the final stretch. If the challenged runner maintains her lead, she is said to have "held off" or "turned back" the challenge.] [The distinctive crescent-shaped metal supports attached to Umamusume racing shoes. By reinforcing the soles of the shoes, they lighten the load on the legs and allow the feet to tread firmly on the ground when running. Since these cleats greatly affect performance, runners maintain them diligently. Cleats are carefully crafted by artisans called cleatmakers, and some Umamusume are even said to use one-of-a-kind custom cleat designs.] The turns on a racetrack can be conceived of in terms of either two turns, or as is more common in Japan, four corners. These are called simply the first, second, third, and fourth corners in the order that they are passed during a race, with the second and third corners typically separated by the backstretch. [The head of Tracen Academy who has full authority over the school's operations. The current director, Yayoi Akikawa, is a passionate educator who pours her soul into supporting each and every student, going to such lengths as to expand training facilities for Umamusume who are trying their best.] [A type of track surface consisting of dirt and sand. Dirt races are particularly common in the United States and the Middle East.] [A margin of more than ten lengths from the following runners (Umamusume).] [A measure of how well a runner is suited to different race distances (sprint, mile, medium, and long). If a runner races at a distance for which she has low aptitude, she will likely struggle to match the speed of others.] [Tracen Academy provides on-campus housing for not only students, but also trainers and faculty. Though not mandatory, most opt to stay in them, as many people come to Tracen from distant parts of the country or even overseas.] [To fade means to lose speed in the final stages of a race due to a lack of endurance.] The best of four designations used to describe the level of moisture in the ground at a racecourse due to precipitation. A firm track is dry and generally considered the easiest to run on. [A strategy in which the runner immediately goes to the front and leads the pack all the way to the finish.] [A unit of distance defined as the equivalent of 200 meters/an eighth of a mile, 220 yards..] [A sign placed on the inside of a racetrack to indicate the remaining distance until the finish line. A sign that reads "2" means there are 200 meters left, not two furlongs (400 meters).] [The second of four designations used to describe the level of moisture in the ground at a racecourse due to precipitation. A good track contains a comfortable amount of moisture and is considered ideal for dirt surfaces.] [All races aside from Make Debut and Maiden races can be classified into one of five ranks according to prestige. From highest to lowest, these are G1, G2, G3, OP (Open), and Pre-OP (Pre-Open). Runners generally begin their careers in OP and Pre-OP races before working their way up to G3 and G2s, and eventually aiming for victory at the G1 level.] [Two G1 races where the field is decided by popular vote: the Arima Kinen in late December and Takarazuka Kinen in late June. The name reflects the degree of attention these races garner among fans as grand showdowns between top runners in terms of both popularity and ability.] [A margin of approximately forty centimeters from the following runner.] [The worst of four designations used to describe the level of moisture in the ground at a racecourse due to precipitation. A heavy track contains an extreme amount of moisture, to the point of being covered in puddles, and is extremely difficult to run on regardless of surface type.] The hit the board means to place in the top five. Because the scoreboard at a racetrack displays results up to fifth place. If a runner finishes in the top five, her number will "hit the board," so to speak. [The straightaway of a racetrack adjacent to the stands. It's the straight final stretch of a racecourse] [While most racecourses consist of a single oval track, the Nakayama, Niigata, Kyoto, Hanshin, and Oi racecourses feature a larger outer track which shares some of its length with a smaller inner track. This allows for a greater variety of distances to be run on the same track.] [The lingering hopes and dreams of those who once carved their names into racing history may spark inspiration in the hearts of those who aspire to follow in their footsteps. It is tradition at Tracen Academy for students to pray to the statue of the Three Goddesses for inspiration.] Faculty members of Tracen Academy are responsible for the education of students who have yet to find a personal trainer. As instructors typically focus on improving the fundamentals and teach groups of ten to twenty at a time, they cannot tailor training sessions to individual student needs. [The year in which an Umamusume debuts. Those in their junior year can only enter races that are exclusive to junior year runners.] [If a runner has a strong kick, it means she excels at pulling ahead with an explosive burst of speed in the final stretch of a race. One may also use it as a verb to say, for example, she "Kicked from Behind" or "Kicked Hard."] [A strategy in which the runner hangs back toward the middle of the pack before surging ahead late in the race.] [The runner (Umamusume) in first at any given moment during a race. One may also speak of "leaders" plural.] A unit of measurement roughly equal to 2.5 meters used to describe the distances between runners in a race. The measure of one length is said to derive from the arm span of the Umamusume, on whom goddess statues are modeled. [A race limited to Umamusume who did not win their Make Debut. A runner with no career wins cannot enter any other type of race until she wins a maiden race, after which she may run in races with a level of Pre-OP or above.] [To make a move means to accelerate in an attempt to move up in position during a race, particularly towards the end.] [The distance between runners as they cross the finish. Margins are measured in lengths (approximately 2.5 meters), with distances smaller than one length described as a "neck," "head," or "nose," in order from longest to shortest. A margin exceeding ten lengths is described as a distance.] A race distance between 1,801 and 2,400 meters. [A race distance between 1,401 and 1,800 meters. As one mile is treated as equivalent to 1,600 meters, races in this category are not necessarily a mile long, strictly speaking. A runner who excels over this distance is called a "miler."] [A runner who excels in mile-distance races.] [A margin of approximately eighty centimeters from the following runners.] [A race distance that is not a multiple of 400 meters. Prominent examples include the 2,200 meters of the Takarazuka Kinen and the 2,500 meters of the Takarazuka Kinen.] [A margin of approximately twenty centimeters from the following runner.] [To place means to finish a race in the top five, in particular between second and fifth position.
