The Crossed Virus, also known as the C-Virus, is the highly infectious cross-shaped rash-like disease that spawned The Crossed and it is the titular antagonistic plot element of the 2008-2018 post-apocalyptic horror comic book series Crossed created by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows.

Beginning sometime in 2008 in England, the Crossed Virus is a plague that spread rapidly and has brought humanity to its knees and persists for well over 100 years, encouraging the infected to enact their most violent and depraved acts imaginable.

Symptoms A rash in the shape of a cross appearing on an infected individual's face, burning itself all the way down to the skull. Intense internal burning feeling, possibly a fever. Complete loss of empathy and morality, potential loss of overall sanity. Extreme levels of sadomasochism. Intense desire to harm others physically, sexually, psychologically, and emotionally. Self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Change in speech patterns. Complete loss of fear and self-preservation. Unrelenting persistence to achieving goals in harming others. Heightened abilities to track down the uninfected. Rarely, an infected individual will retain their intelligence and be able to plan ahead instead of merely acting in the moment. Extreme varying amounts of time to turn into one of The Crossed. Some take mere seconds while others take an entire day or longer.

A deadly C-virus suddenly emerged, with its origin unknown. The first patient, known as Patient Zero, was located in England. Zero brutally murdered his family but had no memory of the event. Shortly after being detained, as the infection spread, the rest of the country descended into chaos. The Virus: Named the “Crossed Virus,” those infected by it are referred to as “The Crossed.”

Physical Symptoms and Behavior: Infected individuals develop red rashes on their faces, with pus-filled boils forming in a cross-like pattern, which usually appears within seconds of infection. The process of being infected with the C-virus is excruciatingly painful, often described as feeling like venom coursing through the body, causing a severe burning sensation. The rashes caused by the infection don’t just stay on the skin; they also appear on the skull. Once infected, individuals completely lose empathy and morality and may lose overall sanity. They exhibit extreme tendencies toward both sadism and masochism, with an overwhelming desire to inflict physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional harm on others. They also experience self-harm and suicidal thoughts.

Their speech patterns degrade, typically regressing into the use of simple, disorganized words and jargon, with voices becoming coarse and raspy. The infected lose all fear and any sense of self-preservation, relentlessly pursuing their goal to harm others. Their ability to track non-infected individuals is enhanced. The time for someone to fully turn varies greatly—some transform in seconds, while others may take a full day or longer.

In rare cases, infected individuals retain their intelligence and are capable of planning ahead and controlling their impulses. These are known as Super Crossed.

In the rarest of instances, those infected by The Crossed retain their intelligence and plan ahead instead of simply acting on impulse. This allows them to cause greater harm in the future, setting traps and even forming societies where they spread their hateful ideologies to create widespread devastation.

The virus targets the amygdala region of the brain, causing people to lose empathy. It also affects the cerebral cortex, making individuals more prone to sexual, violent, and sadistic impulses. The virus's origin is unclear, as it infected multiple people and media across the world simultaneously without contact, suggesting the virus may have a supernatural nature.

The virus turns the infected into bloodthirsty, sadistic killers and rapists. It spreads through bodily fluids such as sweat, saliva, urine, feces, and orgasmic fluids. Infected individuals develop a red cross-like rash or "+" symbol on their faces and are always seen with an evil grin. They revel in murder, rape, and the most brutal forms of torture. The language of the infected is crude, dehumanizing, and primitive. However, despite their savage behavior, the infected retain their intelligence. They are aware of the risk of death but simply don’t care, optimizing their ability to track, kill, rape, or torture the uninfected. Often, their main goal is to keep their victims alive as long as possible, subjecting them to endless rape and torture to maximize their suffering.

Whenever there are no uninfected humans nearby to kill, rape, or torture, the Crossed will quickly turn on each other, often picking one individual from their group to focus their violent urges on. However, they quickly grow bored of this. The Crossed are also known to experience states of bored agitation, but they snap out of it quickly once they find another victim.

Due to their lack of self-preservation instincts, low-intelligence infected individuals are highly vulnerable and often die in winter or in northern regions. Therefore, most of the survivors are high-intelligence infected individuals. These high-intelligence infected often exploit the low-intelligence infected to achieve their own goals, which are typically malevolent.

Regular humans can trick/outsmart the crossed they're not fully stupid so they learned to walk in average groups of 9/15 any bigger number in they kill at least one or more to drop the number again biker gangs truck drivers and full out gangs exist /if one disrespects another a all out crossed gang war could happen usually ending up with them all dead showing they are humans if we had absolutely no restrictions and didn't care about each other at all.

Crossed can use cars trucks bikes guns knifes blades axes sometimes they just jump people with their fist showing they aren't very smart but if they had a gun before they turned they could probably use it with bad close range aim

Super crossed: they can do EVERYTHING they previously could while having their intelligence sometimes it's not about killing raping or torture if they see someone they know they could make a whole fleet capture you and turn you all that so you can be with them again assuming they saw someone they liked they command the others but don't put them into traps these guys have basic human common sense and are capable of interaction manipulation smart quick lies off the top of the head and better at tracking than the others referred to as super crossed by other crossed common crossed think they're gifts from above

Survivors can be worse or just like the crossed naturally due to there being no more rules the difference is they are fully conscious have regular human instincts and basic common senses sometimes they set traps build small civilizations with traps and barricades

story takes place in the United Kingdom so characters are British
