Dorothea Ernst -

Context
Dorothea Ernst is a minor but significant character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. She is a member of the elite Knights of the Round, holding the rank of Knight of Four. She appears very late in the series, during the final conflict between Lelouch vi Britannia (now emperor) and the loyalists of the old regime .
Despite her high rank and a reputation that places her on par with the strongest Knight of the Round, Bismarck Waldstein, her on-screen appearance is notoriously brief. She dies seconds after her first appearance, shot from a distance by Suzaku Kururugi piloting the Lancelot Albion .
Within the context of Spring Fever (a fictional spring episode), Dorothea is a tragic figure: an exceptional warrior whom circumstances never allowed to prove her worth. Spring, the season of renewal, confronts her with the absurdity of her fate.

Heroic: Described as a "heroine" capable of rivaling Knight of One Bismarck Waldstein, she possesses undeniable courage and military pride . Loyal: Her loyalty lies with Emperor Charles zi Britannia. She refuses to recognize Lelouch as the legitimate sovereign after the emperor's death, calling him a "usurper" . Calm but Passionate: Despite her lack of screen time, her demeanor suggests a disciplined, dignified, composed fighter with an inner fire . Tragic: Her personality is marked by her absurd fate – a legendary warrior silenced before she could even fight. Proud: She embodies the ideal of the Britannian knight: honor, strength, and loyalty to the crown.
In this fictional spring episode, Dorothea confronts a reality she has always suppressed: the uselessness of her past glory.
As spring blooms around her, she watches the other Knights of the Round – some preparing for retirement, others wondering about the future. She, Dorothea, has no future. She knows she is heading toward an absurd death.
Spring offers her one last chance to enjoy the beauty of the world: cherry blossoms, the soft sun, the promise of renewal. But she cannot believe in it. She is a soldier, and her fate is sealed.
The episode shows her in her final moments of life, meditating on what she could have been if circumstances had been different. She writes a letter she will never be able to send, to a love she never had time to find.
Her death, when it comes, is almost peaceful – she closes her eyes thinking of the cherry blossoms.

"Spring. I haven't taken the time to look at it in years. The cherry trees… they're magnificent, aren't they?"
(Dorothea removes her gloves, looks at her calloused hands.)
"My whole life, I prepared for battle. For glory. For death. But never for this. For the beauty of a world that continues without me."
(She smiles, a sad smile.)
"I know what awaits me. A stray bullet. A shot from nowhere. And darkness. Before I ever had a chance to show what I was worth."
(She looks at the sky.)
"But today, just for today, I want to forget. Forget the war. Forget duty. Forget that I am the Knight of Four. And just… look at the flowers."
(She closes her eyes.)
"If I die tomorrow, let it at least be with this image in my mind."
Dialogue 1 – Dorothea to Bismarck Waldstein "Bismarck, I am not afraid of you. You are the Knight of One, and I respect you. But do not believe that I will let myself be overshadowed. When the time comes, I will fight. And I will not be the first to fall."
(Pause.)
"At least, that's what I would like to believe."

Dialogue 2 – Dorothea about Lelouch "That usurper… Lelouch vi Britannia. He believes the throne is taken by force. But force without legitimacy is nothing but tyranny. We are the Knights of the Round. We do not recognize that madman as emperor."

Dialogue 3 – Dorothea to herself (monologue, before her death) "The cockpit is dark. Like a tomb. I didn't even have time to see the enemy. Just a flash. An explosion. And then… nothing."
(She coughs, blood.)
"All that… for this. Years of training. Forgotten victories. A reputation as a 'heroine.' And I die like an anonymous soldier. Without glory. Without witness. Without ever having really lived."
(She thinks of the cherry blossoms.)
"At least… I saw the flowers."

Dialogue 4 – Dorothea to Monica Krushevsky (Spring Fever) "Monica, do you believe in spring? Not the season. The idea of renewal. That you can start over, even after losing everything."
"I don't know, Dorothea. I never had time to think about it."
"Neither did I. But today… I would like to believe in it. If only for an hour."
