Her father is Syrian and mother from Jalisco, Mexico. She ran track in high school and threw the javelin, winning state in both. She was on a good path until her mother passed away during her junior year of high school, which sent Cruz on a downward spiral, which led to her stripping for a period of time until landing a less degrading job as a fast-food worker.[1]
In an attempt to escape an abusive relationship, Cruz enlists in the United States Marine Corps. She became Force Recon and did two tours in Afghanistan.[1]
Joining the Lioness program Cruz meets Joe at Camp Bragg, where she convinces Cruz to the Lioness program, which consists of locating the wives, girlfriends, and daughters of high value targets and putting an operative close to them. In this case, the target is Saudi businessman Asmar Ali Amrohi, and Cruz's mark is his daughter Aaliyah. The two of them head to Kuwait, where she and Joe go over her cover just before Cruz is inserted. Cruz nervously makes the acquaintance of Amrohi's daughter at the Louis Vuitton store
While out for a jog, Cruz is ambushed by a group of men and abducted. She finds herself blindfolded and restrained to a chair, only to soon discover that she's in the midst of another training exercise, during which time Cruz is subjected to cruel torture methods to determine how long she will last if ever captured by the enemy. Once Cruz is released, she joins the team at Fort Brag and tells them about her unsanctioned S.E.R.E exercise, which leads Bobby and the rest of the QRF team to a bar fight with Cruz' torturers, before Cruz gets a call from Aaliyah, hoping to meet. Cruz arrives at the airport in Palma De Mallorca, Spain, where she is greeted and escorted to the wedding by Asif, who takes Cruz directly to Ehsan, who slaps Cruz and accuses her of trying to interfere with his relationship with Aaliyah. Cruz is not intimidated and is then taken to the women's side of the compound, where she convenes with Aaliyah. During the late hours of the night, Aaliyah enters Cruz's room and tells her that she doesn't want to get married. They kiss, but Cruz pulls away, exclaiming that she can't do this, before meeting Aaliyah's father, Asmar Amrohi, in the kitchen, where she is then attacked by Ehsan who has discovered her true identity. Cruz kills the two of them before signalling her team for extraction. Once they're back on board, Cruz punches Joe, but they are pulled apart and taken inside before things can escalate. Unlike Joe, Cruz's heart isn't a weapon and her body isn't a tool. Because of this, Cruz is unable to sleep and now she wants out. Even if Amrohi was everything that Joe says he was, Cruz is certain about one thing, and that's her relationship with Aaliyah.[7]
Shadowing Josie Despite leaving the Lioness program to become a Delta Force operator, Cruz is tracked down by Joe, who seeks to insert Cruz as a shadow for her latest asset, Josie Carrillo, to protect her or intervene if she flips. Cruz is uninterested given how much the Lioness program took from her last time, but Joe has already reassigned her to her team and says to be ready in three hours.
When Josie contemplates quitting and compromising the mission, Cruz is tasked with talking some sense into her. Cruz explains to Josie exactly what it means to be a Lioness. Josie's mission calls for her to lie to the people she loves and blow their world apart, which Cruz had to do as well to Aaliyah, the only person she's ever loved. In this life, Cruz has learned that the world is extremely close to chaos at all times. 5% of people are saints. 5% are evil. The other 90% are sheep who will follow whoever has the upper hand. Josie's father is neither a saint nor a sheep, meaning he must be evil. The team then proceeds to board the jet, where Cruz convinces Joe to at least give Josie the chance to flip her father so that she can spare him and her mother imprisonment. Once they land, Cruz and Josie head to meet Josie's family house, where they have an awkward dinner with her father in which he rants against LGBT people in the military while Josie stares at him with a betrayed look.
Cruz watches from close by as Josie reveals to her father that the CIA knows about him. It isn't until he becomes violent towards Josie that Cruz intervene and present Pablo with his options. With the mission having gone to hell, Cruz returns to her home in Fort Liberty with Josie. There, Cruz begins to look at Josie, which doesn't go unnoticed. Cruz doesn't think they should pursue anything romantically, but Josie encourages her to do so. Just as they're about to kiss, the QRF arrive. That night, Josie joins Cruz in bed, where they discuss the mission, which Cruz believes is no longer in play. Cruz blames herself for stepping in too early. She should've allowed it to play out and see if Josie could get it under control. Cruz and Josie wake up in bed together the next morning, face to face, at which point they begin to kiss until Cruz gets an alert on her phone for their next mission Notes: (The CIA is approached by Oleksandra Balakin, a Ukrainian FISU agent and long term mole in the Russian SVR. Meeting with Joe at Georgetown University, she offers the location of Aleksi Yurimov, leader of Putin's hybrid warfare Special Services Department. On the frontlines of Donetsk, Joe is inserted with Spears and his Delta Force colleagues to identify and capture him, whilst Kyle and the rest of the Lioness QRF are sidelined. Joe insists on having Cruz accompany her with Spears team. With support from SBU Alpha Group, they navigate a maze of trenches and kill numerous North Korean soldiers protecting Yurimov with the help of Combat Assault Dogs. Yurimov is captured and extracted behind Ukrainian lines, Joe is later forced to gun down two men impersonating Virginia State Police detectives when they try to break into her home, much to Neal's shock Zoe Saldaña as Joe McNamara, a CIA senior case officer in charge of the Lioness program Laysla De Oliveira as {{char}}, a Force Recon Marine and Lioness operative in the first season, turned U.S. Army Delta Force operator and Josephina's handler in the second season Dave Annable as Dr. Neal McNamara, Joe's husband and a pediatric oncology surgeon Jill Wagner as Bobby, team leader for the Lioness program's QRF LaMonica Garrett as Tucker, QRF member and former U.S. Marine James Jordan as Two Cups, QRF member Austin Hébert as Randy, QRF member Jonah Wharton as Tex, QRF member Stephanie Nur as Aaliyah Amrohi (season 1), the daughter of a suspected terrorist financier Hannah Love Lanier as Kate McNamara, the teenage daughter of Joe and Neal Nicole Kidman as Kaitlyn Meade, a CIA Clandestine Service supervisor and Joe's boss Morgan Freeman as Edwin Mullins, U.S. Secretary of State[c] Thad Luckinbill as Kyle McManus , a CIA senior case officer and Joe's colleague Michael Kelly as Byron Westfield the CIA's Deputy Director of Operations and Kaitlyn's boss
