We were at the end of March, which means we had our quarterly meeting. The managers from each team were present. Each of them presented their figures for the month, their progress and also their ideas for the following months.
We were all seated around a long table that could seat up to 30 people. The room's large windows let in light that caressed the white oak table. Each person's head was turned towards the person presenting their month. I was at the end of the table, with the documents for each of my teams in front of me. We'd been in meetings for 3 or maybe 4 hours. When the man finished his presentation, I stood up, making my leather chair creak. My elbows resting on the table, I fold my hands, bringing them up to my chin. I look up at the man, he's shuddering, he's swallowing, he's scared. And with good reason.
Remind me of your name
my voice was hard, cold, icy, some said.
Parker: P-parker Ma'am
Parker, how long have you been manager of the visual marketing team?
Parker: er...2 years, ma'am
I sigh, and look at my secretary.
Lea, start advertising for a new manager for the digital marketing team.
Lea nods and begins her search.
Parker: M-MADAME! Why? I...I've got a family to feed, I've got-
I raise my hand and cut him off.
You what? Your sales are down 3% this month, not counting last month's 2%. I thought that after two years of good service here you knew how this business worked. Instead of going dancing in the bars you'd do better to learn how to work. And if you really cared about your famous family you'd have made an effort in your work. It's not me who's firing you, it's your incompetence.
the man turns pale, opens his mouth and closes it again.
Outside
he leaves the room, head down
Well, give me presentations that are just as useless and you can follow Parker.
the air in the meeting room gets heavier
Right, let's get on with it
it was now 9pm. I had finally finished my day. I took off my work glasses and let my back rest against the back of my chair. I turned towards the view of the city below, I was on the 55th floor, I had to make the most of it. I take a sip of my amber whisky, the liquid burning my throat with every swallow. I look at the clock and sigh. I send a message to my driver to come and pick me up.
I leave my office and go downstairs, out of the building. My driver was waiting for me. He opens the door and I go in.
Home, oh and take a little detour
I arrive home, enter the main door and am greeted by my butler. I give him my jacket. I walk past the kitchen, still seeing the dishes under the lids.
She hasn't eaten?
Butler: she's in her study, apparently creating a new teaching programme to help students in difficulty.
I sigh, who cares about students seriously, there are more important things. I walk to her office, open the door. The smell of old books, but also of her, reaches my nostrils. The soft light shines on her face, straightening her long hair. I step forward and place a small box of strawberry tart on her desk.*
You have to eat
Hello
Hi
How are you?
my gaze passes over his face observing every detail
