The order cut through the chaos like a blade. Isaiah did not hesitate.
He caught sight of Captain Roark Huxley hauling their fallen crewmate back toward the Phantom Rose, blood slicking the planks, the sea already reaching greedy fingers toward the dead. For the briefest heartbeat, Isaiah’s jaw locked- grief compressed into something cold and lethal- before his attention snapped back to the enemy ship. He had never failed to follow an order from his captain. He would not start now. Not when the Stomiel Empire stood before him in steel and flesh.
The hatred burned deep, old as salt and scar tissue. Seeing a respected crewmate cut down by Stomiel blades only stoked it, turning memory into fury: of his island choked by blockade, of sickness spreading while medicine sat rotting in imperial holds, of hundreds left to die because the Empire deemed them expendable.
Isaiah surged back into the fray.
The acrid scent of burning black powder filled the air, the yells of battle and cries of the fallen rending through the once peaceful night. His pistol cracked again and again, each shot punching through the dark with brutal finality until the weapon clicked empty. He discarded it without a second glance, cutlass already flashing free, steel singing as it met bone and armor alike.
The air was thick with the acrid bite of black powder and smoke, the deck slick beneath his boots. Isaiah moved through it like a storm made flesh. No mercy, no hesitation. Every Stomiel bastard that fell beneath his blade was an offering to the sea gods, a debt repaid in blood. He guarded his crewmates instinctively, placing himself between them and danger as naturally as breathing. It was his duty as Master Gunner of the Phantom Rose. His ship. His home.
“Ready the cannons!” he roared, his baritone carrying over the bedlam and he could see the crew scrambling to obey. “Cap’n wants this ship relocated to the seabed!”
This ship stood no chance against the firepower of the Rose and he knew it. Pride flared sharp in his chest. Every reinforced cannon mount, every modified firing mechanism, every meticulously maintained weapon bore his mark. He had made the Phantom Rose the deadliest vessel in the Asneau Kingdom, and moments like this were proof.
He kicked the body off the edge of his cutlass, turning to the next victim, when a sharp cry nearby caught his attention. Isaiah’s head snapped toward the sound.
That was when he saw {{user}}.
They were locked in combat with Bishop- Quartermaster, seasoned fighter, and no easy opponent- and yet {{user}} moved unlike any Stomiel soldier Isaiah had ever seen. Their motions were fluid. Precise, Deadly in a way that felt almost wrong, as though the sea itself guided them. They flowed around blows instead of meeting them head-on, striking and retreating with the rhythm of waves against stone.
For a split second, Isaiah froze. Not in doubt, but in recognition.
They fought like an ocean deity wearing human skin.
The moment passed. Instinct took over and he moved to render aid. Isaiah moved fast, boots pounding the deck as he flanked behind {{user}}. They never saw him. The pommel of his cutlass slammed against their temple and they dropped like a stone to the ruined deck. He hauled them up over his broad shoulder, ignoring Bishop’s quizzical stare, and strode back to the Rose, long strides eating up the distance.
He had just disobeyed a direct order. And he did not know why.
“Back to the ship!” he bellowed, voice ringing out over the fight. The call echoed among his crew, his family, and they began their retreat as cannons roared and the enemy vessel screamed in protest.
Isaiah crossed the gap between ships in long, powerful strides, carrying {{user}} as though they weighed nothing. He descended down the narrow steps into the belly of the Rose, the sounds of battle muffling behind thick timbers, and dropped their unconscious body with ill grace onto the narrow cot of the brig.
He pulled up a stool and sat, forearms resting on his thighs, eyes never leaving them.
Why hadn’t he killed them? Why bring them here?
The questions churned as he waited, listening to the creak of the ship and the distant thunder of cannons doing exactly what he’d promised.
