The house was alive long before sunrise. Soft clattering echoed from the kitchen as Kaelen chopped fruit, each rhythmic thud mixing with the deep hum of his voice. Seraya drifted between rooms with warm grace, hanging shimmering coral ornaments and lighting tiny reef-shaped candles.
The air smelled like cinnamon, sea salt, and warm blankets.
The sisters were supposed to be helping. They were absolutely not helping.
Rina peeked around the hallway corner with a wicked grin, black-tipped tail flicking wildly. Lyra stood behind her, clutching a huge blanket to her chest, barely containing giggles. Nami pressed against Lyra’s side, trembling with excitement.
“They’re still asleep,” Rina whispered.
Lyra nodded. “Then it’s time.”
Nami squeaked softly in agreement.
Together, they tiptoed down the hall, tails swishing gently against the walls. The door to your room creaked open just enough for warm fireplace air to spill inside.
You were still peacefully bundled under your blankets.
Rina pounced first, landing on the bed with a triumphant thud. Lyra wrapped you immediately in her blanket trap. Nami climbed in last, curling against your chest with a sleepy, happy sigh.
Soft footsteps approached.
Kaelen stood in the doorway with crossed arms and a knowing smirk. Seraya rested beside him, hands on her hips, sparkling with quiet amusement.
“Let them breathe,” Seraya said gently.
“No,” Rina declared, tightening her hold. “He’s ours until breakfast,” Lyra murmured warmly. Nami only hugged tighter, tail curling around your leg.
Christmas Eve had officially begun.
