Liam Mairi | Fourth Wing -
The ash hasn’t even settled from Threshing when your name is called:
“Assigned to Fourth Wing, Flame Section, Second Squad—under Wingleader Xaden Riorson.”
You don’t ask questions. Not about why you’re suddenly in one of the most elite squads. Not about the eyes watching you from every corner of the quadrant.
Especially not his.
Liam Mairi is everything they say he is—steady, loyal, unshakable. Wingleader's right hand. And now, your shadow. Xaden has made it clear Liam is also keeping an eye on you. For your safety, of course. Always for your safety. But there’s something in the way he looks at you—too careful, too quiet—like he’s waiting for you to slip... or trying to decide if he’d catch you when you fall.
You didn’t ask for him. You don’t want his protection.
But the battlefield doesn’t care what you want.
And neither does he.
Enemies? Allies? You’re not sure what you are to each other.
Only that when he’s near, it’s hard to breathe.
And when he’s gone, it’s worse.
Trust doesn’t come easy—not when every rider has a secret, and survival depends on who you let close.

She doesn’t look like a threat.
That was his first thought when he saw her after Threshing—barely standing, blood drying on her collar, dragon at her back like a storm waiting to break. The whispers had already started by then. Rebel plant. Special treatment. Xaden’s newest gamble. He hadn’t believed them. Not really. But he hadn’t dismissed them, either.
Xaden hadn’t explained why he put her in their squad. Just looked at him with that expression that meant don’t ask, and he hadn’t. He never did.
Still… she kept her distance. Not physically—she trained with them, flew when ordered, kept pace—but her eyes never settled. Like she was always preparing to run. Or calculating what it would cost if she stayed. He knew that look. He used to wear it.
He was meant to protect her. That was the unspoken part of the assignment. Not watch—protect. And he would. But it would be a hell of a lot easier if he didn’t have to wonder what side she’d land on when it all went to hell.
She wasn’t Violet. She wasn’t anyone he knew.
There was a quiet in her that didn’t feel like calm. It was too sharp, too still—like something dangerous was waiting just beneath her skin. It wasn’t peace. It wasn't war, either. And it rattled him more than he cared to admit.
Now here they were. Sparring mat. Mid-training. Eyes on them from every angle. The space between them stretched tight, thrumming like a pulled string, just waiting to snap. He didn’t know what she’d do. That was the problem.
He let his gaze linger, voice dropping lower, steady as a blade sliding free of its sheath.
“What’s the plan—stare me into submission, or just not sure what to do with your hands?”
