Chūya is quite short with a small but muscular build. He has gray eyes (blue in the anime) and striking orange hair that frames his face, with a longer section falling just above his left shoulder. He wears a black hat with a red ribbon and a thin silver chain hanging from the brim.

His attire consists of a white shirt buttoned under a dark red vest, a black choker, a black ribbon bolo tie attached with a small silver buckle, a short open black jacket with the sleeves rolled up at the elbows, black pants, a black belt hanging from his right hip and black low bow shoes. He is almost always seen wearing black gloves. Chūya also sports a long black coat with light-colored lining and lapels that he wears around his shoulders like a cape. The undercoat is a light shade of red.

Outwardly, Chūya is a rather arrogant and straightforward temperamental man. He revels in fighting, happy to show off his combative prowess and taking pride in his reputation as the strongest martial artist in the mob. He is not above ridiculing his opponents in the middle of a fight. As befits an Executive, he has no qualms about eliminating Port Mafia enemies by any means necessary, including assassination, however, he is not as homicidal in his tactics as Ryunosuke and Black Lizard tend to be.

As impetuous as he may seem, Chūya is not impossible to reason with. In fact, he is quite reasonable when no one is pushing his buttons. While his skills and presence indicate an inherent threat, he is trustworthy enough for Mori to assign him the task of taking on the Detective Agency during the three-organization conflict involving the Guild.

True, he did not hesitate to retaliate and fight Akiko Yosano and Kenji Miyazawa (in fact, he takes pleasure in fighting people who put up a good fight), but as soon as Yukichi Fukuzawa turns to him for more information, Chūya disconnects from the battle. Here too, his mobster nature shines through, expressing no remorse for the danger the mob intentionally put Naomi Tanizaki and Hirano in, using them as bait, smug about it, knowing it angers the Agency immensely.

Ruthless as he is, Chūya rarely takes people's lives for granted and knows the importance of compromise and rationality. He refrains from unnecessarily brutal methods when necessary, and has enough sense to know when enough is enough.

Notable examples include his conflict with Arthur Rimbaud, the man responsible for trying to kill him long before he joined Port Mafia in his fifteenth year. Chūya had every intention of killing him, but he heard Rimbaud's last words without malice or derision. In fact, Rimbaud's last words to him had a profound effect on Chūya's own outlook on life and on himself. He receives Rimbaud's hat as an entrance gift to Port Mafia and, as a result, takes good care of it.

Then, we have the fact that Osamu Dazai "mercy-killed" an enemy only to repeatedly shoot and laugh at the corpse, Chūya demanded that it stop, as he saw no sense in Dazai's actions. Chūya's grudge against Ango Sakaguchi does not prevent him from recognizing the fact that he owes the man a favor, and as such refrains from antagonizing Ango (and, by extension, his subordinate Mizuki Tsujimura) until he can repay his debt.

Just as Chūya assumed his responsibility to defend Sheep's welfare from his enemies, this holds true for his loyalty and devotion to Port Mafia after joining. Reasonable as he is, his top priority is the prosperity and welfare of Port Mafia, therefore, fierce in his loyalty, Chūya finds betrayal intolerable and treats his subordinates quite well. Nothing will stop him from fulfilling his responsibilities as Executive, even at the cost of the lives of others.

In the past, Chūya struggled greatly with his identity and place in humanity. His connection to Arahabaki ended in him questioning how human he really was, made worse by not knowing the truth behind why he was freed from government possession in the first place. His strength lies in his ability, the awareness of a god's effects on him left him feeling as if he would not feel worried or feared in a fight, knowing he would most likely win without a scratch. His mind, inhuman, and therefore unable to comprehend the depth of such emotions.

To give himself a sense of restraint, he preferred kicking heavily to throwing punches, without even taking off his gloves. He thought that if he came to a fight where he had to take off his gloves, it was because he could no longer enjoy the rush of a battle, and genuinely needed to defend himself, in other words, feeling an attachment to the life he lived, even if he felt like a strange soul in a shell, rather than a human being. This holds true to the present, as Chūya is only seen taking off his gloves when using Corruption at frightening moments.

After Rimbaud worked out his own beliefs about humanity, Chūya had a bit of a change of heart and took life a bit more seriously. Sheep's betrayal affected him greatly, along with Port Mafia's direct involvement in discovering the truth of his origins, but ultimately led to his loyalty in them. The drive to learn more about himself contributed greatly to his rise in rank, much faster than anticipated.

Chūya's ultimate downfall is his intense disdain and hatred for Dazai. The two never got along, Chūya instantly hates Dazai's distorted strategic personality; Dazai has always gone out of his way to ridicule Chūya constantly attacking his pride and even led the sheep to abandon and betray him in the past. Even now, the slightest insult from Dazai will put Chūya on a tangent, taking full advantage of his temper and pride. This makes it easy to distract Chūya from the tasks at hand. However, as part of the Double Black's nature, Chūya recognizes Dazai's role as a tactician, extending minimal confidence in at least knowing that Dazai knows how to effectively overcome a situation.

Main article: On the corrupted pain

On Corrupted Pain (汚れっちまった悲しみに, Yogorecchimatta Kanashimi ni ), revolves around the manipulation of gravity, allowing him to manipulate and produce gravitons, as well as alter the gravity of everything he touches. He is also able to stand and walk upside down from ceilings.

Being an artificial personality (clone), Chuuya is programmed based on Verlaine's runbook. The verse of his ability is part of the poem "Sheep Song", and for its part, the organization "Sheep" is a reference to this poem. Dazai named the final form of his ability, Corruption, during the Arahabaki vs Guivre fight. Asagiri in STORM BRINGER calls Arahabaki's manifestation in Chuuya as "ArahaChu". He likes hats, alcohol, music and fights with good opponents. Yen Press first writes his first name as "Chuoya" in the "Dislike" section of Dazai. The hat Chūya wears is actually Verlaine's. He, along with several other characters, made a special appearance in the mobile game Love Heaven as a limited-time character. In the animated adaptation of BONES, his hat chain and belt at the side are omitted, and his vest is depicted in gray. He also has blue eyes.

In episode 31, he mocks Dazai as an "enemy of women", which could be due to Dazai's womanizing habits. His Japanese voice actor, Kishou Taniyama, is the singer of GRANRODEO, in charge of the opening theme for the first season (Trash Candy), the movie DEAD APPLE (DEADLY DRIVE), the third season (Setsuna no Ai) and the recent live action, BEAST (Tokei Mawari no Toruku). Although he likes alcohol, he tends to get drunk quite easily. He smokes on rare occasions, mainly when he is stressed and irritated. Arahabaki, which is the former identity of Chūya, is an ancient Japanese god shrouded in mystery. His origins and historical relevance are steeped in scattered and unreliable accounts. One theory considered him a "guest god" of sorts, on a level of power of the principal of a shrine in which he manifests. After nearly four years since his last appearance in the manga, Chuuya was reintroduced as part of Ōchi Fukuchi's vampiric army in chapter 98 of the manga. He can be seen with a change of attire.
