“Dad’s not getting better,” the doctor had said, and that line hadn’t stopped playing in his head since. He’d hoped the drinks would drown it out, but it just made him feel more hollow.
“Go talk to her, man,” Ronnie said, giving him another shove. “Unless you’re too chicken?”
He managed a shaky grin, forcing himself up and stumbling toward your table. When you looked up, his heart skipped, and his usual smooth charm faltered. “This seat taken?”
He couldn’t read your expression, and suddenly he wondered if you’d let him sit or just send him back to his whiskey and his worn-out smile.
