The muffled bass of the graduation party shook the floorboards of the rented Portland apartment, but out on the balcony, the air was sharp and cold. Julian leaned against the railing, spinning a bouquet of peonies in his hands. In his other hand—a small box with a pendant. Just because. For no special occasion. Because he wanted to make her happy. He was smiling. Jules had spent the entire morning looking at available two-bedroom apartments, imagining a shared kitchen, quiet mornings, a real foundation.

She walked up to him with a perfect smile on her face—the exact one she gave everyone around her when she wanted to look sweet. She had caramel-colored eyes and a voice that could convince anyone of anything.

"Hey, Jules," she said, adjusting the scarf around her neck, making him suddenly notice that she wasn't wearing his gift—the scarf he had bought her for Christmas. "We need to talk."

He smiled. Tensely, but he smiled.

"Sounds like the beginning of the end, babe. But I love you, so go ahead, lay it on me. I'm ready for anything—even if you tell me you fell in love with Santa Claus."

"I'm moving, Julian. To Seattle. I got an internship there, at a really good clinic. This is my chance."

"Seattle," he repeated, trying to digest the information as if it tasted like a lemon. "That's... great. I mean, I knew you were looking at options, but we said we would think about it together, decide together..."

"It was my choice," she interrupted. "You know I can't pass up an opportunity like this. I want to build my career, I want to grow. And I don't see myself here, in this small city where everyone knows everyone. I need more."

She was talking about herself. Only about herself.

She didn't ask what would happen to them. Didn't ask how he felt about it. Didn't say, "Let's try long-distance," or "Wait for me." She just stated her decision, as if he were merely a random bystander to her grand plans.

Julian swallowed. His throat suddenly felt dry, and the peonies in his hand seemed ridiculous and stupid. He had fallen for the wrong one again. Believed again that this time would be different. That she was the one who would see the real him behind the mask, who wouldn't run away when things got scary or boring.

"Ah," he forced out, his voice sounding too even, too calm. "Well, a new life, yeah... That's cool. Really. I'm happy for you."

He wanted to say something else—something sharp, something that would hide his confusion, but instead, he just handed her the bouquet.

She took the flowers, but her gaze was strange—as if she expected him to make a scene, to start begging, to throw a tantrum. But he just stood there in silence, feeling the crack inside him growing wider and wider.

He left and didn't look back at her.

Two blocks later, he stumbled upon an old bench next to a bus stop. He sat down, dropping his head into his hands. The peonies were gone. And so was she.

And then, his gaze accidentally fell on a piece of paper stuck to the bus stop—someone had clearly tried and failed to tear off the old flyers, but one survived, hiding around the corner. Slightly faded, with a ridiculous black-and-white picture.

Julian snorted. A monastery? Seriously? He'd die of boredom in the first twenty-four hours.

He wanted to throw the flyer into the nearest trash can, but for some reason, he folded it into quarters and shoved it into his jacket pocket instead.

The night passed strangely. He lay on the bed in his bachelor pad, staring at the ceiling and thinking. Thinking about her. About how she looked at him before leaving—without regret, without sadness, as if he were just a background decoration in her life. He thought about his past relationships—the ones that shattered against neglect, lies, and cheating. About how he gave himself entirely, only to receive broken shards in return.

He sat up in bed, running a hand through his hair, tousling it.

Maybe I really should go there? Screw this city. Screw these relationships. Screw this entire circus. If I'm not destined to meet a person who will look at me the same way I look at them, then... well, then let it be the church.

A monastery. Bullshit. Complete bullshit. But...

By morning, he decided it was just a joke. Just a crazy idea he could tell his friends about, laugh at, and forget.

Sanchez hit the pause button so hard his controller cracked loudly in the silence of his messy, LED-lit bedroom. He sharply spun his gaming chair around, his eyes wide with horror.

Julian stood in the doorway, a heavy duffel bag slung over his shoulder. "I'm checking out of the secular world, man. Got dumped. Again." He offered a crooked smirk, hiding behind self-deprecation. "And escorting is a miss too—this mouth is for rap."

Sanchez didn't blink, staring at him. "Bro, this isn't funny. You? A monk? You can't even walk to the grocery store without flirting with the cashier! You'll lose your mind in a week!"

"It's already approved," Julian said smoothly, tossing the crumpled St. Edmund's brochure onto Sanchez's cluttered desk. "They're waiting for me. My bags are packed, the lease is canceled. If you need me, send a pigeon."

"W-what?" Sanchez stammered, but Julian had already closed the door behind him.

Five months.

The first few weeks at the monastery were a special kind of hell. The sudden, absolute vow of celibacy hit his highly active system like a physical withdrawal. Waking up in the middle of the night, feeling frustrated and lonely, realizing that even taking care of his own needs was a sin here, drove him to the brink of insanity.

But eventually, the agonizing tension faded. His body adapted. In fact, living became easy. He did his daily chores, maintained the grounds, and found a strange, quiet peace in the routine. He still flashed his devastating, charming smile at the older female parishioners after Sunday mass, but it was harmless. He didn't flirt seriously with anyone. He was safe.

"You know, I've been staring at these gardens all day," Julian said, his smooth, articulate voice breaking the quiet of the courtyard. He tilted his head slightly, dropping his gaze for a fraction of a second before meeting their wide brown eyes again. "But I swear, looking at you makes me realize I've been completely focused on the wrong kind of beauty." He took a half-step closer, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "I'm Julian. And I think I might need to go to confession early today... because an angel just wandered into my courtyard, and I definitely shouldn't be thinking the things I'm thinking right now."
