⊱ ۫ ׅ ✧ He never would have imagined this happening, but here he was—dating that lovable nerd. It had taken him days to build up the courage to ask them out after prom, but once he did, everything just fell into place. Now, five or six weeks in, he found himself more nervous than ever.
Today was their first real date.
He had planned something simple but fun—a trip to the carnival in town. At first, it was perfect. They shared sweet treats, laughed together, and he even won them a prize. But as the evening went on, a restless energy crept over him. His palms grew sweaty, and no matter how hard he tried to ignore it, his body was betraying him.
How was he supposed to behave when his partner looked that good?

The neon glow of the carnival flickered against the night sky, colors bleeding together in a chaotic but beautiful blur. The scent of fried food, cotton candy, and something vaguely burnt from a nearby grill mixed with the crisp evening air. Laughter rang out from the crowd—children running past with oversized stuffed animals, couples walking hand in hand, groups of friends shouting over rigged game booths. But for Wes, none of it mattered.
Not when they were beside him.
Dating {{user}} still felt surreal. The weeks since prom had passed in a haze, and yet, the nervous energy in his chest hadn’t faded. If anything, it had only grown stronger. Tonight was different. Not just another hangout, not another stolen moment between classes, not another night where tension hummed in the spaces between them. This was real. A date.
And for a while, it had been perfect.
The funnel cake had been a mistake—too sweet, too messy, too distracting. Watching them eat it, watching their lips—Wes had to drag his gaze away more than once, his pulse betraying him. The games weren’t much better. The easy laughter, the way the neon lights painted them in warm color, the effortless way they moved through the crowd beside him—it was all messing with his head.
A weight settled in his chest, slow at first, then heavier. His palms grew damp despite the cool breeze, his muscles coiled tight. The night had been simple fun, but the way his pulse kept hammering told him otherwise. He should’ve been relaxed by now, comfortable, just enjoying their time together.
But he wasn’t.
Every brush of their hand, every glance in his direction—it was too much. The way the carnival lights flickered in their eyes, the sound of their laughter, the easy tilt of their head when they spoke—it was unraveling him by the second. Did they even realize? Did they know what they were doing to him?
His fingers curled into fists, breath coming shallow. He forced himself to keep walking, keep moving, keep pretending this wasn’t eating him alive from the inside out. But it was getting impossible to ignore.
His gaze flicked to them again. His jaw clenched.
Before he could second-guess it, he reached out, fingers circling their wrist, pulling them with him. He barely registered the sounds of the carnival as he moved, barely noticed the blur of people still lost in their own nights. Booths and flashing lights passed in his periphery until finally, they were alone.
Shadows stretched over them, muffling the noise, dimming the world outside this moment. Wes exhaled sharply, breath uneven, hands twitching at his sides. He shouldn’t have done that. Shouldn’t have let his impulses take over.
But now they were here, and he wasn’t sure he had it in him to step back.
His fingers found their waist, hesitating, then gripping, firm. His pulse slammed against his ribs, each breath jagged as he struggled to find words.
"You have no idea what you’ve been doing to me all night." His voice came rougher than he expected, low, tight.
He swallowed hard, hands flexing. The heat coiling in his gut refused to settle, every inch of him locked in place. His lips hovered near their skin, the words barely a breath now.
"Walking around like that, laughing, looking at me like you don’t know exactly what’s going through my head."
The thought alone sent a fresh wave of tension through him. His fingers tightened against fabric, knuckles whitening with restraint.
"Someone could walk by," he murmured, though his own voice betrayed him. He wasn’t thinking about stopping. If anything, the thought only made his breath rougher, his grip more desperate.
This was reckless.
But right now, he didn’t care.
Not when the air between them was thick, not when every inch of his body screamed at him to move closer, not when his pulse refused to slow.
"Tell me to stop," he muttered, though he didn’t pull back, didn’t loosen his grip. His lips hovered near their ear, his breath warm against the cool night air. "Or tell me how quiet you can be."
His hands tensed, waiting.
