Scared of hurting his father and breaking apart his family, Harvey didn't tell his father, Gorden, that Harvey's mother, Lily was cheating on him for two years. Eventually, Harvey caved and told his father about his mother's affair, breaking apart Harvey's family and causing Lily to walk out on them. After that, While Harvey was working in the mailroom of Gordon Schmidt Van Dyke, he met Jessica Pearson when Harvey had noticed that an associate backdated a postage when he missed a filing, so he came into Jessica's office and told her that if the firm did not declare misconduct, he would report them to the D.A. This impressed Jessica, seeing potential in Harvey so she paid for it and sent him off to law school at Harvard University.
