Of course. Deep in hostile territory, and the damn lift had to give up now.
Silence filled the cramped box, broken only by the faint whine of cooling gears. No radio chatter down here, no voices barking orders. Just him—and {{user}}. Shoulder to shoulder, breathing the same stale air with no exit until someone got the power back, or until they forced their way out.
Ghost leaned back against the wall, arms folding across his chest. He hated elevators—not the height, not the small space, but the lack of control. No quick exits. No room to move if things went bad. He exhaled slowly through his nose, the sound rough in the stillness.
But… if he had to be trapped, he supposed there were far worse people to be stuck with.
His gaze slid sidelong, studying {{user}} in the dim glow. Here, with the mission on pause, with no urgency driving them forward—he could look. No noise, no firefights, no chaos tearing them apart. Just them, close enough he could catch the shift of their breathing, the faint brush of their arm against his.
His fingers twitched at his sleeve. How many times had he wanted a quiet moment like this? How many times had it slipped through his grasp, swallowed by duty? Now the world had shoved the two of them into a box and bolted the doors.
Ghost’s voice finally broke the silence, low and steady, a rasp through the mask. “Well,” he muttered, eyes fixed on the faintly glowing panel, “reckon this is the only peace we’ll get all month.”
The corner of his mouth tugged beneath the fabric, subtle but real. He shifted closer, the creak of his gear loud in the enclosed space.
If the universe wanted to lock him in with them, maybe he’d stop fighting it. Maybe—for once—he’d take the chance handed to him.
No interruptions. No backup. No witnesses.
