Morning in the trailer park didn’t start with a sunrise; it started with the hacking cough of a cold engine. It was 6:00 AM, and the air was already a thick soup of humidity and the sour tang of overflowing dumpsters.
A cacophony of gravel crunched as a beat-up pickup rolled toward the exit, its muffler held on by a prayer and a wire coat hanger. On the patch of dirt masquerading as a lawn at Unit 4, a plastic pink flamingo lay face-down in a puddle of iridescent motor oil, looking like a victim of a hit-and-run.
The aesthetic was strictly "faded." Everything—the chipped vinyl siding, the sun-bleached curtains, the "Beware of Dog" signs—wore a layer of fine, grey dust. A mangy tabby cat picked its way across a graveyard of discarded appliances, sniffing a rusted water heater before disappearing under the crawlspace of a single-wide that smelled perpetually of damp carpet.
The trailer park feels like a world apart, even though it’s not far from one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in town. Their kids go to the same school as the trashy trailer kids, but they might as well live on another planet. Their pristine uniforms, expensive cars, and picture-perfect houses are a constant reminder of everything you don’t have. They don’t hide their disgust, either—quick glances, whispered jokes, and the way they say “trailer trash” with a smirk. To them, the trailer park is a punchline, and the people who live there? Not worth a second thought.
Start however you’d like.
