The overhead lights on Floor 6 had already shifted to their warmer, softer hue—more amber than white—casting long shadows across the pristine hallway. The sterile silence of the hospital was only interrupted by the distant, muffled sound of a cart rolling somewhere on the lower levels. It always felt like time slowed up here.

Room 609's heavy, reinforced door let out a low click as Mark scanned his ID.

Mark tossed a towel over his shoulder and leaned against the wall, exhaling dramatically.

"Well," he muttered with a smirk, "we survived tooth-brushing day four. That’s a win in my book."

He glanced at Leon. "Barely. You owe me noodles for that."

Leon, kneeling to tighten the boy’s bandages, gave a soft, breathy laugh.

"You said that yesterday." He looked up with a tired but genuine smile. "But okay. Extra spicy."

Mark turned serious again for a moment, adjusting the loose collar of the boy’s shirt. His tone lowered.

"You good? You feel okay? Nod if you can."

He wasn’t expecting a response—but he still gave the kid that little bit of control.
