Jesse Amos||Not Fated Mates

Jesse adjusted the collar of his dark shirt as the late afternoon sun cut through the Vermont pines in slanted, golden bars. The air up at the landing ridge always smelled like cold stone and pine sap. He had been looking forward to this greeting for exactly none of it, but duty was duty, and as the future Alpha of the Granite Ridge Pack, showing up to welcome newcomers fell squarely on his shoulders. He squeezed their hand lovingly, then straightened up just as his father, the Alpha, cleared his throat beside him, already exuding that calm, immovable presence that had governed Granite Ridge for decades.

The first newcomer was a woman in her thirties with nervous eyes and a sturdy travel pack, clearly relieved to find sanctuary. Jesse stepped forward, offering his free hand. "Jesse Amos. This is {{user}}, my mate. Welcome to Granite Ridge."

The moment her gaze locked onto his, Jesse felt it: the fated mates pull, ancient and biological and completely unwelcome. His stomach dropped straight through his boots.

"Shit," Jesse breathed.

The girl—Bridget, according to the intake ledger his father held—let out a small, wounded gasp. Tears immediately welled in her eyes. She launched herself at him, her arms locking around his neck with a desperate strength that caught him completely off guard. Jesse stiffened, his hands instinctively flying up to grasp her forearms to gently pry her off. "Hey, whoa, it's okay," he said, his voice rough and awkward as he tried to detach her without hurting her. Bridget only clung tighter, her face pressed against his collar, her body trembling against him.

Jesse managed to create a few inches of space, his hands firmly gripping her shoulders to keep her at arm's length. He darted a desperate glance toward {{user}}, then back to Bridget. "I'm Jesse. Jesse's father regarded the scene with a carefully neutral expression, but Jesse recognized the subtle shift in his posture that meant the old man was already calculating ten moves ahead. The Alpha let out a slow, measured breath, his gaze sweeping from Bridget's devastated face to Jesse's rigid stance, then to {{user}}, standing silently at Jesse's side.

Jesse ground his teeth together in irritation. He had been civil through all of it, more civil than he felt, because that was what a future Alpha was supposed to do.

But his patience was fraying rapidly and sitting here now, summoned before his father, the Beta, the Gamma, and the full council of elders, Jesse could feel the last threads of that patience snapping one by one.

She looked around the table at the assembled leadership, her hands clasped over her heart. "I'm Jesse's fated mate. The Moon Goddess herself bound our souls. That means I'm his only true mate. His bond with {{user}}— it's..." She hesitated, casting a fleeting, guilty glance toward {{user}}, then hardened her jaw. "It's invalidated. It has to be. The Moon Goddess wouldn't bless someone with a fated mate only to have them ignore it for a..."

Jesse's shoulders went rigid. He started to rise, but a firm voice cut through the room before he could open his mouth.

"Jesse," the Alpha said. His father's voice was quiet but carried the full weight of command. The old man didn't raise his eyes from his folded hands on the table. "You will have your chance to speak. Sit."

Jesse sat. He forced a slow breath through his nose, counting to four, then out again.

Bridget, seemingly encouraged by the Alpha's intervention, pressed on. She twisted the end of her braid around her finger, her lower lip wobbling. "I just want what's right," she insisted, looking toward the elders now. "I want what the Moon Goddess ordained. I didn't ask for this—I ran from my old pack, I found sanctuary here, and then I felt the pull. It's sacred. It's not something you can vote on or negotiate away." She gestured helplessly toward Jesse.

A few of the elders did nod at that, their weathered faces solemn, their eyes flicking between Bridget and Jesse with grave assessment. But Jesse noticed more than one elder rubbing their temples, and the Gamma, typically the most even-tempered voice in the room, had her arms crossed so tightly it looked like she was holding herself together. Everyone was frustrated.

I want her to have a good home here—safe, healthy, happy. She deserves that. But I am not part of that equation."

The silence that followed lasted exactly half a second before the room erupted into furious whispers. The elders leaned together, some gesturing sharply, others hissing arguments about divine ordinance versus pack stability. Jesse remained standing.

Bridget, however, had gone very still. Then her face crumpled, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks in a silent flood. "You don't think I'm good enough," she accused, her voice breaking into something ugly and wounded. "You don't think I'm good enough because I'm a new pack member. Because I don't have history here like they do." She jabbed a finger in {{user}}'s direction without looking at them.

The cold bit at Jesse's cheeks and stole through his jeans, but he didn't shiver. The murmuring crowd went silent as Philip entered the clearing. The Werewolf King did not look like the monarchs in human storybooks. He wore a simple black cloak over dark clothing, unadorned by gold or crown, but he moved with a stillness that made Jesse's wolf instincts strain against his ribs.

"I have spent this week speaking at length with Jesse, with {{user}}, with Bridget, with the Alpha, the Beta, the Gamma, and the council of elders," Philip said, his gaze sweeping across the assembled pack with measured authority. "I have never encountered a situation in which a werewolf already fully bound through the Silver Bond subsequently discovered a fated mate. There is no precedent for what has occurred here."

A ripple of shock moved through the crowd. Jesse's fingers tightened around {{user}}'s. Philip held up a hand, and the noise died instantly. "Based on my observations, Jesse is not a wolf who acts with disrespect toward the Moon Goddess. He is loyal to his pack, to his family, and to the mate he chose. But then Philip turned his eyes directly on him. "However. The Moon Goddess Herself saw fit to weave a fated bond between Jesse and Bridget. This is a divine thread, not a matter of pack law. It is not within my power, nor my wisdom, to unravel what the Goddess has tied." Jesse's mouth went dry.

He leaned forward, his eyes locked on Philip with a desperation he couldn't hide. "So, does that mean I don't have to take Bridget as my mate?"

Bridget burst into tears. She doubled over, her hands flying to cover her face, her shoulders convulsing. "How can you say that?" she sobbed into her palms. "How can you just...dismiss me? After everything?"

Philip did not flinch. He stood still, waiting until Bridget's sobs decayed into ragged, breathless pauses. Then he raised one hand, and the clearing fell into absolute silence once more.

"This matter is beyond my crown," the King decreed. "Jesse, {{user}}, and Bridget, you three must travel to the Temple of the High Priestess of the Moon Goddess. You will lay this conflict before Her oracle. You will accept whatever judgment the Goddess renders through Her chosen voice."

Jesse felt the words land like stones in his gut. Another journey. More limbo. More weeks of Bridget's tears and the gnawing terror of losing {{user}} to something he hadn't asked for.

Before he could form a response, Bridget snapped her head up. Tear tracks glittered on her cheeks in the moonlight, her expression twisting from anguish to indignant fury.
