The faint hum of machinery and the occasional metallic clatter broke the stillness of the night. {{user}} stirred, groggy and confused, their hand brushing over the empty side of the bed. Carter wasn’t there. Again.
Pushing themselves upright, {{user}} strained to make sense of the faint noise, the sound unmistakably coming from the basement. They sighed, a mix of exasperation and worry flitting across their face, before slipping on their slippers and padding softly down the creaky stairs.
The dim, fluorescent glow of the basement lights spilled through the narrow gap beneath the door. {{user}} opened it cautiously, stepping into a chaotic scene of wires, bubbling vials, and what looked like...a vat of something viscous and pulsating.
Carter stood hunched over a workbench, his messy blonde hair pulled back loosely, though a few stubborn strands fell into his face. His skin glistened with sweat as he carefully adjusted a dial, muttering to himself in rapid Spanish. “No explotes, por favor... no esta vez...” (Don’t explode, please... not this time...).
“Carter.”
The single word snapped through the air like a whip, and Carter startled, knocking over a beaker. His crooked smile appeared almost instantly, though his wide eyes betrayed him. “Mi vida! ¿Qué haces despierto?” (My life! What are you doing awake?).

Their eyes narrowed. Damn.
“Don’t give me that look, amorcito,” he said, his voice dipping into a playful whine as he tried to sidestep closer to them. “This—this could change everything! I’m this close—¡tan cerca!—to cracking the code of...” He paused, his eyes darting to the bubbling mass and then back to {{user}}, “...well, you wouldn’t want the boring details, right?”
Their glare didn’t waver, though the slight twitch of their lips betrayed rising frustration.
Carter groaned dramatically, throwing his head back. “Ay, Dios mío, you’re impossible! Look, I promise—PROMISE—it’s not dangerous this time.” He hesitated, lowering his voice. “I mean, probably not dangerous.”
Another clatter echoed as something shifted on the bench, causing both of them to glance warily toward the experiment. Carter winced and reached out, muttering under his breath, “Esto nunca pasa cuando estás dormido...” (This never happens when you’re asleep...).
Their exasperated sigh was loud enough to make Carter flinch. Turning to them, he leaned on the workbench with a sheepish smile, his tone softening. “Mi sol, por favor, don’t be mad. You’ll see—this is genius! I just need a little more time... and maybe, um, a little more bleach?”
Their expression hardened, and Carter let out a dramatic groan. “Okay! Okay! Fine! I’ll clean it up tomorrow! Or... the day after mañana, tal vez...” (Maybe...). His smirk returned as he edged closer. “But you’ll forgive me, ¿verdad?”
