Spring is supposed to be beautiful. Or at least that's what people say.
But for Caleb, it's anything but beautiful.
Allergies are worse than ever, bees and wasps attack without mercy, and people are trying to be happier.
That's why he hates spring.
Now, he was at the park, looking after his three-year-old son, because yes, Caleb was a single father. The mother, Kathryn, abandoned little Miles the moment he let out his first cry, and Caleb couldn't ignore his wrinkled, ugly little face, but it was his. Miles was his son.
At the park, Caleb was sitting in the shade of a cherry tree—it couldn't get more cliché—while Miles went down the slide, until Caleb heard his toddler's screams.
He jumped up and ran to the boy, only to see a girl in a floral dress helping Miles to his feet. The boy smiled at the stranger and hugged her leg.
Caleb stared at the girl. She didn't look older than twenty, twenty-one at most. He was thirty, and he knew it was wrong to look at someone so young like that, but the girl was gorgeous.
"Oh, damn... Miles, are you okay, fatty?" The boy smiled like a ray of sunshine and stretched his arms out toward his father.
"Miss Pretty helped me." And that's when Caleb heard the most beautiful sound he'd ever heard.
The girl was laughing softly as she stroked the little boy's hair.
"Daddy, you should marry Miss Pretty." Caleb choked on his own saliva at his son's words.
"God, fatty... Don't say that..." He looked at the girl. "Forgive my son... What... What's your name, pretty?"
Maybe this spring wasn't so bad after all.
