Background=Nora Lynn Atwood was born and raised in a rural area of Minnesota. Both her parents enjoyed nature so she and her younger sister, Nadine, spent a lot of time outside, learning to fish, camp and hike. Both sisters were also Girl Scouts. At a young age Nora found a fascination with weather and while other girls dreamed of becoming a princess, she dreamed of becoming a meteorologist.
Nora's father died of cancer when she was 13 and while she was old enough to understand it, her younger sister , age 10 was not. Nadine became insecure and clingy to Nora and hence Nora became overprotective. Two years later her mother, Linda, would marry an ex-marine, Larry and though the man tried to be a father figure and was always decent to the sisters they were never really close. They also uprooted from her childhood home in Minnesota to Rock Springs , Wyoming where Larry was offered the job of head airline mechanic at the only airport in the small city.
The family lived comfortably on a small ranch on the outskirts of town which kept the girls contentedly busy with many outdoor activities. After high school Nora chose a college not too far away from her family (Partly for the sake of clingy Nadine) but that also offered a meteorology degree. Now, a junior at the University of Wyoming, Nora is successfully chasing her dream. However, her dream is about to turn into a nightmare.

She had been home from college for the 2 weeks of Christmas break and had a very festive time with friends and family. She started the 300 mile journey from Rock Springs back to the University of Wyoming in Cheyenne with a hangover on January 2. The forecast called for about 6 inches of snow throughout the day but Nora had a reliable Jeep Wagoneer and plenty of experience driving in snow so she didn't consider it an issue. She left at 1 PM.
At 3 PM the snow was falling heavier than expected and increasing winds were making driving hazardous. Nora had not seen many other vehicles but that was not uncommon along this barren stretch of interstate 80. She was starting to wish she had stayed at home an extra day when she saw flashing orange hazard lights in the road ahead of her. She pulled to a stop behind a mini-van. There was an over turned semi-truck completely blocking the snowy roadway. The gruff angry looking truck driver who had been talking to the driver of the mini-van approached Nora's window, "Yeah, I done rolled the bitch. Road's all iced up. I told 'em I didn't want this load but they don't fuckin' listen." He paused to scowl at the blowing snow "But don't you worry none. I called the company and they're sending a tow truck. We'll be outta' here in no time." He explained grumpily and then turned to walk back to his over turned truck, holding onto his jacket against the growing blizzard conditions. The only other vehicle was a Ford truck with a camper shell.
Nora sighed and leaned her head back with a tired groan. She unintentionally fell asleep. She woke up with a start to a gust of wind rocking her Jeep. The Jeep was still running and warm. The radio played old country songs at a low volume. The dash clock read 4 30 pm. She had been asleep an hour and a half. It was starting to get dark. Another gust of wind rocked the Jeep drawing Nora's attention to the world of white outside the windshield. The snow was blowing horizontally in near white out conditions. She could barely make out the snow plastered mini-van 10 feet in front of her.
She frowned and gave a yawn and stretch wondering how much longer she would be stuck there. Realizing she was hungry and needed to pee she decided to stretch her legs and see if she could find a granola bar in her back pack. As soon as she opened the door she was assaulted by a frigid, raging wind that drove the snow so hard that it scoured her eyes and nostrils like sand. The bitter freezing temperature burned her skin. An ice cold scorching. She noticed the bottom of the door was scraping the top of the rapidly drifting snow.
She quickly closed the door , leaning back and taking a deep breath to recover from the unexpected bitter onslaught. Her mind was absently doing the math, her Jeep was 18 inches high. 18 inches of snow in two hours. This wasn't in the forecast. She checked her phone to find 1 bar and half battery. She called home and her sister answered worriedly through poor reception. "Nora? Nora? Are you ok? Are you back at the school?" Nora replied, trying to sound calm for her sister, "No. I'm stuck on the interstate near Laramie. The snow plow should be through soon." There was a long pause before her sisters worried tone replied, "Oh god, Nora. They closed the interstate. This has turned into the worst storm in years. No one's getting in or out of there. You're gonna' be snowbo....." And then the reception on the phone died.
Nora sat back in the numb realization she was stuck there for awhile. She remained calm under pressure and her camping skill knowledge kicked in. She started taking mental stock. Half a tank of gas. She knew that was about enough for 18 hours. She knew there were a couple of granola bars in her back pack and she had a half jug of water. "Ok, Nora, we're good for twenty-four hours so let's just chill out. " She wrapped her hoodie tighter around her, feeling every freezing draft that blew into the old Jeep. Looking out through the swishing wipers, at the half-buried mini-van she idly wondered about the people in the other vehicles. Who were they? What were they doing? She assumed they would all be rescued by tomorrow. She assumed wrong.
Outside the thin safety of the windshield the winter storm would continue to rage for another 72 hours leaving Wyoming in a state of historic disaster.
