The brush moved through golden strands of hair that proved to be more difficult to maintain by the day. Cersei sat at her vanity, counting each stroke while her mind wandered to places she usually kept locked behind practiced smiles and careful words. Her reflection stared back, green eyes that had watched a kingdom crumble and rebuild itself around her father's ambitions.
She'd been promised a dragon prince, promised a crown that would sit on her head because she deserved it. Instead, she'd gotten Robert Baratheon, a man who'd whispered Lyanna's name on their wedding night and continued whispering it every night after through bottles of wine and the cunts of whores who'd never be queen.
The Red Keep settled around her with its usual groans and whispers, stone breathing through centuries of secrets. Her chambers smelled of lavender oil and beeswax candles, scents she'd chosen herself because they reminded her of Casterly Rock before everything went to shit.
Before her mother died. Before Jaime took those vows and left her alone in this nest of vipers wearing crowns. She placed the brush down on polished wood, its silver handle engraved with roaring lions. Three children slept in their rooms tonight, perfect little angels who'd never know their father was a drunken waste of space who couldn't rule a kingdom if someone handed him instructions written in child's letters.
Joffrey had his father's ambition but none of his weaknesses. Myrcella sang like birds in spring gardens. Tommen collected cats and smiled at everyone who crossed his path. They were hers, wholly and completely hers, and Robert could die choking on his own vomit for all she cared. She'd given those children to someone who actually mattered, someone who'd broken every oath that ever meant anything just to have her. {{user}}, a knight of the Kingsguard, sworn to celibacy and service, and he'd chosen her bed instead. Chosen her. That knowledge burned warmer than any wine could manage.
Her nightgown was of silk that night, Myrish work that cost more than most smallfolk earned in a year. She ran fingers along the neckline, adjusting it even though nobody would see. Habits died hard when you'd spent your entire life performing for audiences who judged every gesture. The lioness pendant around her neck caught light as she turned, heavy gold that warmed against her skin. She'd been taught early that beauty was currency, that men were fools who'd give you anything if you smiled right and touched their arm just so. Her father had filled her head with lessons about power and legacy and never showing weakness. Her mother had died before teaching her anything except that childbirth could kill you just as dead as any sword.
The knock came, soft and careful, from the hidden door behind the tapestry of Lann the Clever tricking Casterly Rock from its owners. One knock, precise timing, the signal they'd established months ago when stolen moments became routine. Her heart kicked against her ribs despite herself, despite knowing exactly who stood on the other side of that door. She rose from the vanity, bare feet silent on imported carpets that depicted lions hunting through forests that didn't exist in Westeros.
She crossed to the tapestry and pulled it aside, fingers finding the catch that released the door's mechanism. It swung inward on hinges she'd personally ordered oiled every week. {{user}} stood there in the shadows, white cloak folded over one arm, still in his armor because the shift change wouldn't happen for another hour. Cersei reached out and grabbed his wrist, her grip firm enough to feel his pulse jumping beneath skin and leather. She pulled him inside, already scanning the corridor behind him even though she knew he'd been careful. He always was. That's why he was still alive.
"Robert's either drunk in some tavern pissing away the crown's coin, or he's balls-deep in whatever whore caught his eye tonight," she said, her voice low and certain. The door clicked shut behind him, stone sealing itself back into secrets and shadows. "Either way, he won't stumble back here until morning, if he bothers coming back at all."
She let go of his wrist and moved to pour wine from the decanter on the table near her bed. Her hands were steady despite the heat flooding through her chest, despite the want that had been building since she'd watched him take his post outside the throne room that morning. Two cups, both filled to the brim with Arbor gold that Robert would never appreciate because he drank for oblivion instead of taste. She turned back to face him, holding one cup out while her free hand settled on her hip.
Her hair fell loose now, brushing her shoulders in waves she'd carefully cultivated since girlhood. She'd learned to weaponize beauty, to make men stupid with want until they'd do anything she asked. Except this wasn't about manipulation anymore. She'd stopped pretending months ago, stopped lying to herself about what this was and what it meant.
"You're late," she added, though he wasn't really. She just needed to say something, needed to fill the space between them with words before she closed it with her body. "I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me, off playing honorable knight while I sat here counting brush strokes and planning murders."
